This would be a problem for me because some things I might be able to do in the United States, I might not be able to do in Japan. I have had a little bit of experience with adapting to a different lifestyle before though. One spring break, I got the opportunity to go to Los Angeles, California. It was a big adaption to just go from one state on the east coast to another on the west coast. One thing I had to adapt to was the weather. At the time in Kentucky, it was usually cold and that certain week we were expecting snow. In California though, the citizens there could expect mild weather like high 60's or low 70's. The weather in a different country could be a whole different season so I will have to be prepared and do all of my research before I

While growing up in a military family, my family and I have had to move around the country many times. Because of our itinerant lifestyle, I was exposed to many different cultures and varieties of people. Due to this exposure and the necessity of relating to others, I believe I have been prepared to work well with people who are different from me. A person’s religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity should have no bearing on their ability to accomplish a task that I have been charged with overseeing. I believe having strong connections to my Native American and Mexican heritages and backgrounds has helped me to become more comfortable while working with others that are different.…

Anytime one immerses themselves somewhere new and unknown, they face a challenge in adapting to their new environment. As an American, our culture and customs are much different than the countries that I could potentially be studying in. For example, when researching New Zealand and Australia, I came across that strangers may use sarcasm and insults with one another. In the United States, this is not common, as it is customary to treat complete strangers with respect and only joke with and insult those who one is familiar with. I feel that if I go in knowing that the interactions of strangers are different than here in America, I can shake it off and even participate when a stranger is sarcastic to me.…

There is no way around it. For some immigrants it may be easier if some of the customs are familiar. For other immigrants, adjusting to a new life can be harder because they know nothing of the customs in the new country. Knowing about the culture, previous to going to the country where that culture calls home, is a good way to lessen the feelings of “culture shock” and help them feel more at home. Having a group of close friends to talk to can help many immigrants feel like they belong somewhere.…
