Here, everyone is at the same level with all the basic core classes; reading, science, and math. While some students may grasp the concepts faster than others, all the content is new so placing everyone into the same level seems fitting. Next comes middle school and from my experience, this is when sorting truly starts. Math and reading are the subjects where students get sorted into remedial, regular, and advanced classes. From having been in Read-180, a preparatory reading class, and Pre-Algebra, an advanced math class for the middle school level, I felt both the positives and negatives of each class level.…
Imagine being someone who doesn't know anyone, where anything is, and how to do most things. “Schooled” is about someone named Cap who was raised in a hippy commune and ends up moving to the city where he barely knows anything. In the story, Cap meets many people that change throughout the story, and they get “Schooled.” Being schooled is being taught something. “Schooled” is an appropriate title for this book.…
When you are doing your work, be quiet, or you might miss a fun activity in the future. Lastly, make sure you do your best all the time. My experience in 6th was great, and it helped me learn things I never knew. I made new friends, and learned to be happier. Most of all, 6th grade taught me techniques that made me understand more.…
Entering into unit two of the Math 1201 course, I find that the concepts in the reading crystallize in my mind after an average of two to three readings. Failing to employ proper use of fundamental mathematical concepts appears to be the major bane that deters my ability to comprehend the material any faster. For example, neglecting to execute operations in the proper sequence caused me initial problems when converting from the general quadratic form to the standard form, specifically completing the square. Furthermore, my neglect resulted in personal doubt in my ability to perform the operation as I would arrive at an answer different than the solution contained within the textbook. Realizing the error in my conversions was a result in my…
We all love American history but history class is the most hated subject taught in school. “Just memorize the notes, and you’ll be fine on the test,” said every history teacher I have ever had in my schooling. What do we really learn and reflect on from history class? Is it the teacher who can not teach or is the textbook that makes it boring? In “Lies My Teacher Told Me” by James Loewen, he criticizes how textbooks distort American History in a way that corresponds with the mindset of rich white Americans through the “heroification” of historical figures and America itself, the mistreatment of Native American peoples, and the enslavement of African American peoples.…
Because I’ll be able to retain more information by writing them out, then that would be my choice. When writing by hand, the information is processed as you’re writing, which helps you in the long-run because you’ve already made…
When it comes to my schooling I find it beneficial to stop, think, and breathe before submitting an assignment. It reminds me to review the instructions, reread what I wrote, check my grammar and spelling, and check the format.…
Sixth grade for was one of my most difficult years of my life so far for a few reasons. First off, sixth grade was my first year of middle school, meaning a whole new school, new school system with class schedules, lockers, multiple teachers, and having passing periods were all new concepts for me to grasp as a kid. More importantly however, the second reason sixth grade was so difficult for me was that over the summer leading to that school year, me and my family left the Catholic church that my mom’s family had been going to for about a hundred years or so, and it was a completely different environment for our entire family because we spent the entire summer up to the first week of school looking for a new church in our area, going to a new…
There will also be pen and paper available if you wish to take notes as…
I see all forms of work as a self portrait, wether this the process we use while we write or how we find the solution to our math homework. My belief is that as we are constantly learning we are evolving at the same rate. The process that I use now to solve my math homework is a reflection of the way I solved problems in kindergarten. The difference is now I have more tools in my frame of reference helping me along with more knowledge of the subject. I can recognize someone by their art work as easily as you can recognize a write by their work.…
When i read i use various types of reading strategies. One of those strategies is re-reading. There are times while i am reading where i dose off and miss whatever i was suppose to read. Rereading allows me to get a juste of a part of my book that i have missed and prevents confusion. It's important to reread incase you have missed an important part of you book.…
Dear 6th grader, Hi! I’m sure some of the other 6th graders have met me, so I here to tell you you will have fun in 6th grade, but I'm not saying there won't be times you will hate it,but it will be fine. 6th grade is a cool grade to be in, but it is also harder. When you are mad I advise to talk it out or use it to beat other people in gym. It is going to be a fun 6th grade year.…
To me this quote means that getting good grades is only HALF of your education. Having a good character is the other half. For example, one day after my soccer team had just lost everyone was mad. They wouldn’t say “good game” when they high fived the other team, except me because I had learned a lesson. I learned that even though it hurts to lose you still need to be a good sport.…
I have been wanting to write a advice post for high school freshmen for about a year now, so much that I wanted to start a blog focused on high school advice. Right now, I am well into my sophomore year of high school, and unfortunately, this isn't a common time to post an article like this, because most, if not all students, have gone back to school. But I couldn't not post this, because I think a lot about giving well-written, helpful advice that isn't cliche. (And by "a lot", I mean A LOT, as in almost every single day.) My next post will explain the weird timing, and also, there is no way I would want to post this during the upcoming summer, or as a junior, because I won't relate to it as well, and I'll definitely be more into the college stuff.…
My son Khuzayf Akhmedov attends class as a first grader in Mrs. Stern's classroom. I am having an issue with my son's teacher Mrs. Stern. She has been nothing but disrespectful to me and taking it out on my son. Every time I have come to speak with her, she does not address me as she addresses the other students' parents. I am beginning to see she has an issue with me…
