Moving Back To College

As I write this, I am sitting at a local coffeeshop by my University. A coffeeshop I really like, actually. It has gorgeous art on the wall and the coffee is exceptionally well made, and I love some exceptionally well made coffee.

A couple of days ago I made the incredibly difficult decision to withdraw from my Uni for the year. Going to college was always something I couldn’t wait for as a kid, but as the move-in day started coming closer, I got less and less excited. It was your typical college move-in day—hot, stressful, sad. I mean, I cried for the rest of the night after my mom left, haha. I met my roommate for the first time in person, and we had things in common: both vegan, both studious, both Harry Potter fanatics. The “welcome week” back to college went really well; I made friends with people around campus and the other people in my dorm. I was really

I didn’t want to be at college, I didn’t want to study, I decided I needed a break from the world of academia. After being in school for about 15 years in a row, a person needs a break.

I talked to my parents about it (my mom is always understanding, my dad isn’t some of the time). Ultimately, I made my decision. I was going to withdraw my enrollment for the time being. I had no idea what I wanted to study, or do with my life, and that was something that terrified me.

As for now my future is unclear, but I have a general idea of the things I want to do. Firstly, I’m going to have to work in order to have money for the things I want to do. I want to travel (either to California, New York, or London), and volunteer abroad (South Africa, Laos, or Thailand). I want to follow my heart for once, and do something that I genuinely am excited about.

Diane von Furstenberg once said, “I didn’t always know what I wanted to do, but I knew the kind of woman I wanted to be.” At this moment in my life, this is a quotes I agree with 100

Would you ever think someone would name their kid after the phrase priest town? Well I didn’t think so until I found out Preston means priest town. But my parents didn’t even know what the name Preston meant. My mom just liked the name because it sounded good with Lawson and my older sister's name, Madison. My middle name - Ray came from my dad because his middle name is Ray and my papaw on my dad's side was named Ray.…

Even being an American has it’s problems. Especially coming from a Hispanic background. I was born in South Carolina, when I was five years old barely starting Kindergarten, my parents decided a big change for my brothers and I. We moved to Mexico, we lived there for about three years I started school there, so I never really had the chance on learning English. After I started going to school in Mexico, my parents decided to come back to South Carolina. That’s when everything was confusing, I didn’t speak any English which was very terrifying to me.…

For my Ethnomethodology assignment I decided to tell my parents that I was going to drop out of college. A few days before I did the assignment, I started telling my parents how hard college was and how bad I was doing in college. For a couple days I continued telling them things like, “college is getting to hard,” “I’m really having trouble doing all my work,” and “my grades are not good”. They were very concerned about this and told me to just keep trying and to do my best because they knew I was smart enough to get through it. So after I keep feeding them that information one day I decided that it was time to tell my parents that I was going to drop out.…

As I entered my first year of college this past semester, I not only found I like college but that I absolutely love being at Messiah. I want to help other incoming first-years to work through the worries of starting college in the same way that Amy and Megan (my RA’s) helped me. As people in my life have pointed my strengths out, I have realized that I love to be around people and building solid, deep relationships. People in my life encouraged me to walk down the hallway during welcome week, pop into people’s rooms and just say hi. This has led to some of…

Dolores seems to be a very big part of her family unit, which will bring some stress for her in college. Her siblings have already expressed that they will miss their sister when she goes off to college. Furthermore, her mother sees her as a support system, being that Dolores helps her with not only the troubled relationship she has with Dolores’ father, but with her disabled 10 year old sister. I think after some time in college, Dolores will most likely start to feel some guilt over not being able to help out at home because college will take up so much of her time. This will obviously cause her stress which on top of the stress of Freshman year, will cause her a lot of anxiety.…

When it comes to the future, I haven't made any definitive decisions, but I've been considering several ideas. What I do know for sure is that I want to attend a four year university, and I would like to receive at least a bachelor’s degree. If I had to choose today, I would probably pursue a career in Occupational Therapy, but I am also considering going into the music industry, or possibly politics. In order to become an OT, you need to receive a bachelor’s degree, preferably in a science field, as well as a graduate degree from an accredited university.…

As a student approaching adulthood, I am commonly asked what I want to major in, where I want to live, and what career path I wish to take. The truth is, I have no fathomable idea of what I will be doing five or ten years from now. I don’t have the slightest clue of who I want to become. This does not scare me, because I know my potential. I refuse to be content with anything less than my dreams, whatever those may be.…

I cannot tell the future, but I have a good idea of what I want to do and where I will be. Ever since I have been little I have always found joy in helping others, knowing that I had done a good deed has always brought a smile to my face. My initial thought when I was younger was I wanted to fly planes, not as a commercial pilot, but for the Air Force. Later on I realized that I couldn’t help too many people while flying in a plane so I looked to joining the Army with the ultimate goal of helping those who cannot protect themselves and keep my home safe and I still believe in those reasons today.…

My transition from childhood fantasies to adult goals was anything but seamless and I often found myself lost, especially in academics.…

My first week of college at FAMU was enjoyable. I was lucky to have been able to come here with two good friends, but I would still like to get out of my comfort zone and meet new people. Starting college was definitely not as scary as I thought it would be, but my first couple days were very overwhelming with professors having upcoming assignments on the syllabus when I hadn’t even purchased my books yet. Though I am still adjusting to the nature of my new environment, I know once I fully adapt, I will be fine. As I get used to the academic environment of FAMU, I am still trying to adjust to the physical environment as well.…

Transitioning from high school to college can cause a harsh wake up call for students in the beginning. It turns out that college is on another level compared to high school. For me, I noticed many differences in the teaching methods and learning methods in college and high school.
