One thing I learned from the video is that those 85 years old and older are the fastest growing part in the population and that within 25 years from now there will be over 70 million older adults living in America. The consequences of the increase in population of the older adults is that there will be more people with normal changes of aging, more chronic illnesses diagnosed, and an increase in demand for preventative health services (Tabloski, 2010).
I think the most surprising finding from the video was that the hardest part in aging and illness is deciding what choices to make in regards to the illness. This is not only difficult for the patient, but for their loved ones and care givers as well. The way people die is paramount to those who are left behind (Holdsworth, 2015). Many elderly individuals would give up years in order to have a good death. Most elders do not want to slowly deteriorate and not have a quality of life.

A living will allows the patient’s opinion and choice to be honored in the process for treatment (Klein & Coogle, 2015). Most patients do not want to be a burden to their family or loved ones. I work on a unit where there is a lot of geriatric patient admissions. That being said, a lot of these patients have several comorbidities and have lost quality of life, so it is important that the discussion of a living will is performed. It is part of the admission process currently, but I believe I will be more adamant about those who do not currently have a living will and inform them of the importance of

Having a living will is an important aspect of estate planning. For John and Beverly we recommend that you draft a living will. A living will is a great way to ease the family’s obligations when a loved one gets into a serious accident. For example, a living will can provide a guideline for what decisions should be made in the case of incapacitation. You could appoint someone to make life sustaining decisions on your behalf in the event you become incapacitated.…

A living will is a document that indicates a patient’s wishes regarding their health care and how they want to be treated should they become seriously ill and unable to make or communicate a decision of their choice. However there is some evidence that it is much more difficult to anticipate a person’s state of mind when dying than had been thought, and equally as hard, if not impossible should one be in a coma. In order to understand both sides of the issue we must take a look at both sides.…

A living will is a document that sets out a patient's wishes regarding health care and how they want to be treated if they become seriously ill and unable to make or communicate their own choices. Living wills are also called active declarations. Such a document may be helpful to relatives and to medical professionals in the case of a seriously ill and incapacitated patient. Living wills are a part of planning what to do in the event of serious illness or disability. The phrase has been used as a handy media label to such an extent that many people focus on the document itself, rather than the actual process of advance care planning.…

Hospice YouTube Video After watching the following video above, what I learned is Hospice isn’t always the best for patients. The video mentioned numerous times that it seems people aren’t really getting the chance to die where they would like and how they would like, which is a problem because the elderly or those terminally ill are not getting to die the way they want to, and end up not having their wishes granted in their final moments. In the video, it was highlighted that when people like the elderly and terminally ill arrive at the hospital people are not surprised when the outcome of the patient coming in is death, because the trained professional such as nurses and doctors sort of just know what is coming.…

Benjamin Franklin once famously said, “Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” There are several pieces of literature like this quote that elaborate on how people deal with and have dealt with mortality. In the book The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, two star crossed lovers, Hazel, a teenage girl with terminal lung cancer, and Augustus, an 18 year old with Osteosarcoma, are left with little time and have to live out the rest of their lives to the fullest. In the book Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, Morrie, an elderly man formerly a professor of Sociology at Brandeis University, who is diagnosed with ALS and…

Being a certified nursing assistant (CNA) for elderly comes with many challenges, and I didn’t discover this until after did my clinical at a nursing home. There, I observed many opportunities for learning and growth in long-term care. With the permission of my instructor, I explored around and had a little time to communicate with the senior citizens. I continued to make observations and found that communicating with the elderly presents difficulties that impact the CNA’s ability to implement routine care. Communication barriers can create stress and tension between CNAs and senior patients.…

Autonomy is the fundamental principle that ensures patients the freedom of choice to determine what happens to their person, as long as those decisions produce no harm to others. This principle is grounded in respect for persons, that is, each individual is treated as a person of moral worth and moral agency. Autonomy implies that people have an inherent right to make treatment decision and should thus be active participant in their own care. An advanced directive upholds autonomy by indicating to the medical system and family what your desires are when it comes to prevalent medical issues. They are an important stepping stone towards ensuring your legacy will never detour from your desires.…
