My mom and her sisters dealt with a very similar situation when her parent’s health started to decrease. It started about 7 years ago when my grandparents started to forget things and were getting weak. My mom and her sisters wanted to move them into an assisted living facility, but my grandparents were in denial and did not think they needed that. They thought they were fine and were going to be better. My grandmother loved to host parties and loved to cook for other people. My grandfather had fallen several times and had to have surgery. He eventually had to move to a walker permanently because he could not walk on his own. My grandmother would always say that once he got better, she would start hosting parties and having friends over again.

He is not able to feed himself and is clearly uncomfortable. His children do not live far away, but would not be able to be there for him every day. Even though he might be able to live on his own for a while, I think it would be a safe decision to move him to an assisted living. The decision is more for the kids, so they feel better and are not worrying about him all the time. Obviously, his wife could take care of him, but that causes her to be the caregiver and might take her down. This happened to my grandparents.
