By knowing and understanding the history it helps to understand the basic structure of the graphic novel Persepolis. There are two main dimensions in the novel, the social aspect and the religious aspect. During the revolution, the clergy were becoming authorities whose goal was to stress the importance of religion. They opposed the anti-Islamic regime and its capitalistic nature, which led them to unite. You can see this unity in the book through the demonstrations that Marjane talks about wanting to go to.…
During the course of the Iranian Revolution, there were many conflicts in the fight between individual freedoms and collective national obligations. Ideally, individual freedoms and collective national obligations should coincide, but they clearly did not coincide during the Iranian Revolution. Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi and "Individualism and Freedom: Vital Pillars of True Communities" by Edward Younkins affect the readers' views on individual freedoms and collective national obligations by stating the importance of individual freedoms while undermining the strengths of collective national obligations. First of all, a source that convinces the reader of the importance of individual freedoms is Persepolis:…
There are few things that traditional western culture values more than protecting the innocence of a child. In other words, this story recounts the horrors that a little girl faces in a war zone.…
In the movie, Persepolis, Marjane express freedom in three different ways; the way she acts around people, the way Marjane and her family would talk about freedom, and the way Marjane and her family would try to gain freedom. Many people believe that freedom mean the same thing to everyone, but to other it has a whole other meaning. For example, people in the U.S have a different way of showing their freedom then people from North Korea. In this essay that I wrote, my purpose is to inform the audience about what freedom mean to someone.…

With this in mind, Persepolis is an autobiographical graphic novel about Marjane Satrapi reflecting back on her life during the Islamic revolution in Iran. Throughout the novel, Marjane writes the history again by adding an unique identity to Iran that rejects the government in power and the religion associated with the government. Satrapi often challenges Western perspectives of religion in the East. Additionally, The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini, is a fictional story about an Afghan male named Amir recalling growing up during the increasing social, ethnic and political changes in Afghanistan.…
The films in today’s society leave nothing to the imagination. The viewers are given a visual of each character and can see their facial expressions throughout the movie. When they cannot read their thoughts on the page in front of them, it is hard to figure out their reasoning and personality. Authors can be very discrete about how the innocent are portrayed and sometimes it could be very evident. In The Kite Runner and Persepolis Khaled Hosseni and Marjane Satrapi present victors and victims by introducing the foil characters of Mehri, Marji, Hassan, and Assef, by using the theme of social classes which Hassan and Mehri are both victims of Assef, and the new regime whom are the victors, they are portrayed as so to the point where they lose…
