When I think about things I’ve seen that have had a big impact on me and how I think about my life as well as the world around me the movie I think of is Requiem for a Dream which is based on a novel of the same title by Hubert Selby Jr. This is a movie that is dark and painful and scary but at the same time its beautiful in its own way. In my interpretation of this movie I believe that it’s not just about peoples troubles with additions but rather a story about an attempt at pursuing the American Dream and whether or not such a thing even exists.
This movie starts out with a young man and his widowed mother; she is addicted to watching televisions shows and getting skinnier so that she can be on a TV game show herself. I relate this to all of us growing up and while we are young we have our parents to protect us and make all of our decisions for us and as we start to get older we still have guidance but we start to be able to make some decisions on our own and we start trying to learn right from wrong. Some of us do and some of us don’t. Suddenly though we are let out into the world completely on our own and we have to make all of our own choices and we no longer have our parents to protect us. Some people can handle this pretty well and then some people make the wrong decisions and start to head down the wrong path much like Harry and his friends
