A difficult task for any movie director would be recreating popular literature in its truest form, while also incorporating the director’s artistic vision, in order to make the text his or her own as well. The supernatural drama Lovely Bones, directed by Peter Jackson, was released on December 11, 2009. The award winning movie, based on the bestselling novel by Alice Sebold, impressively recreates the chilling murder story of fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon and the events after her death. Through the course of the movie, the viewer watches as Susie must contemplate her need to avenge her untimely death or her desire for her family to heal; while watching everything unfold in her own personal purgatory. Jackson was able to do so with his personal depiction of the “in-between,” purgatory between heaven and earth. Rather than creating the cliché heaven as portrayed in other films, Jackson brought his own artistic signature and made it personalized to Susie’s character. Since this dwelling was meant to be a joining platform between life and after life, Jackson was able incorporate the events occurring on earth in dream like fashion in the “in-between.” The vivid imagery shows the connection that Susie has to earth, also further expressing the emotions of he loved ones she has left behind. When Susie’s father, played by Mark Walberg, begins to process that he has lost his daughter, his outburst of anger , and destruction of the model ship relays over to were Susie is. During the exact moment that her father is breaking down, Susie’s goes into a start of shock and denial learning that she is truly dead. The connection is shown as the model ships in her dream like world begin to crash, this visual representation shows that Susie and steal feel what is going on one earth and that she has not let go. The effects in this movie bring the viewer into the minds of the characters, creating a more enjoyable film
