Despite its unusual premise, the story is still segmented into the Monomyth’s archetypes of Departure, Initiation, and Return from the Hero’s Journey. Kung Fury departs from his normal life following his partner’s death, is initiated into another world when he gains his new strength and returns to his old life in Miami following Hitler’s defeat. The film focuses on the physical struggles he faces, but there is another subplot detailing Fury’s mental journey. The emotional anguish of losing his beloved partner leaves him a lone wolf on the police force, until Triceracop demonstrated incredible loyalty when he travels back in time and saves him much like the dialogues in the Hero’s Journey. Overall, Kung fury is an exceptional film that all 80’s film buffs should see. Not only does it have insane action, it has a plot related to the Hero’s journey and a soundtrack to die for.
