Education is the foundation of our society. It is supposed to help children of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds succeed with equal opportunity, however, this is often not the case. Race and class unfairly play an important role in whether or not schools get sufficient funding and the success rate of the students attending. Stand and Deliver, released in 1988, highlights the social issues surrounding education in a Hispanic high school in a poorer area of Los Angeles. Education in America is a major problem.…
With so much production and consumption of a plethora of different forms of media, too many people never need to need for it to be any different than how it is, never have to wish it would change. Too many people, unknowingly, take for granted something another group of people would weep with joy at finding. This is what being represented in the media can feel like. African Americans experience anywhere from negative representation to erasure from television, film, literature, and even the educational curriculum. This lack of active or positive representation stems from a long, complex history of slavery and racism.…
A negative is a type of image that is placed on plastic film. When this negative is viewed, the darkest areas of the actual subject will appear the brightest, and the lightest areas of the subject will seem the darkest. This is because the light-sensitive chemicals within the camera reverse the order of colors. When a camera is shot, the chemicals become darkened by exposure to the light. Like black-and-white negatives, color negatives use the same type of technology.…

Racism is the belief that some races of people are better than others (Merriam-Webster).…

Both videos, We Were Here and The Normal Heart, truly encompassed the heartache and anger which flowed amongst the homosexual and general community. We Were Here is a follow-up documentary which found men and women who lived in San Francisco during the AIDS outbreak and questioned them on how the disease impacted them during that time period. This documentary highlighted the struggles the community went through as they watched the people around them get added to the list of AIDS victims.…
According to the U.S Census, there are around 655,000 current African American high school seniors. Yet, when reading the statistics of the Ron Brown scholarship applicant pool, there were only 4,000 students who applied. These 4,000 merely makeup .006 percent of the black seniors in this country, and they shine a light on an area that the Ron Brown Scholar program needs to address. Today, the modern education system is tainted with bureaucratic and oligarchical tendencies that prevents students of color, and low socioeconomic backgrounds from excelling in this highly competitive field.…

Education in the United States went through great reform in the late 1800s to 1900s. Change didn’t come about easy and educational equality is still a popular debate today. Although educational change was talked about and seemingly in progress, equality still had a long way to go. Differences in racial and social classes became prevalent especially through schooling. Black Americans were limited and restrained with obstacles such as what schools they were allowed to attend, what classes they were to take, and by what the teachers were taught to educate on.…

David Denby paints us a picture of how Hollywood portrays high school life in movies. The very first movie of the Bring It On series, titled Bring It On, fits his description almost perfectly. The main characters in this movie are high schoolers that are very passionate about cheerleading. It sounds like an innocent movie that everyone can watch, but this movie contains a lot of adult humor. Denby described Hollywood’s portrayal of high school as a “never ending nightmare” (p. 366).…
