The film, She’s the Man, centers around Viola, a high school tomboy who plays soccer. In the beginning of the movie she finds out the very heart breaking news that the women’s soccer team has been cut from her high school because by the male dominated administration because not enough girls signed up to play. Viola comes up with a great idea and proposes it to the boy’s soccer coach. She asks him if the girls can try out for the boy’s team. This movie exemplifies many gender roles, gender inequalities, and discrimination against women that are present in today’s society. If one were to watch this movie and recognize the theme of gender and see the gender messages that are apparent, then much valuable information can be gained from this movie rather than just pure entertainment. This movie accurately reflects society’s beliefs that women are inferior to men in all aspects, but with particular emphasis on sports and physical activity. The movie is based off the stereotypical belief that in order for a woman to even be considered as equal to a man that she must dress up and pretend to be a man. It exaggerates the social norms that men are the dominate sex and that women are totally dependent on men. It also displays the sad reality of today’s society that women are just seen as objects and that men are deemed as real men depending on how many girls they can get and on how they behave towards women, especially in front of other men. She’s the Man exhibits the sad reality of today’s social gender norms. This movie’s message was more than just winning a soccer game. It is about attempting to prove to the world that a young woman dressed and portraying the image of a man can compete in today’s male dominated world and succeed.
