1. Personal conviction translates into action because when you strongly believe in something, you are more likely to take action due to your passion for it. For example, Erin personally connected with the residents of Hinkley and this fueled her decision to take action against PG&E in order to help the residents. In the movie, Erin first met Donna, a Hinkley resident, to inquire about her PG&E medical records. After finding out about Donna’s history of tumors, as well as PG&E’s claim that the chromium they used was at a safe level, Erin decided to dig deeper and find out more. That had nothing to do with what she originally came to Donna for, but Erin sensed there was something more to the story and it was due to her personal conviction that she decided to investigate further. She didn’t have to look into the chromium levels; however, Erin cared about people and wanted to help if she could, which caused the action of her conducting further research. Erin was first an informed citizen when she researched about the laws surrounding safe levels of chromium and tested the chromium in Hinkley’s groundwater. She became an active citizen when she decided to do something with this information: she told the Hinkley residents about the contaminated water and convinced them to take legal action against PG&E and persuaded her boss, lawyer Ed Masry, to take on the case. In addition, her understanding of the issue enabled her to effectively represent the interests of Hinkley residents in the case. For example, she immediately shot down PG&E’s offer of $20 million because she knew it wasn’t enough to cover all the medical costs and that PG&E could afford to pay a lot more money.
