Movie Analysis: O Brother Where Art Thou

O Brother, Where Art Thou is a film directed by Joel Coen portraying the life of three escaped convicts adventuring rustic Mississippi During the Great Depression. The movie is loosely based on the poem The Odyssey written by Homer. The film opens on a chain gang of the penal farm, where are three main characters are introduced Ulysses Everett McGill, Peter Hogwallop, and Delmar O'Donnell (played by George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson), which are escaping to pursue an alleged buried treasure Everett buried before the area it is buried in is flooded to make a new lake. After a feud between Pete and Everett, they are rejoined with Tommy after a run-in with the KKK. Everett then leads them back to town and apologizes in hopes they will help him try to win his wife back. After they are recognized as the Soggy Bottom Boys and helping the mayor to get reelected it does not take long for his wife to come back, on the condition he gets her wedding ring from the house that is about to be flooded for the lake. As the group arrives they are greeted by the sheriff, after being pardoned by the mayor for helping him, but he intends to hang them anyway. As the group faces the gallows Pete and Delmar begin to pray as they have come to know Jesus over the course of their journey, but when all seems lost Everett drops to his knees and prays for help, and at this moment the waters rush in for the new lake. Once the four make it to the surface safe and sound Everett tries to play it off, but you can notice his mind may have been changed. O Brother, Where Art Thou does an amazing job of depicting the southern culture through setting, the genre of music and character
