The Disney film Mulan is a story about a strong heroine. In the beginning of the movie, Mulan was sent to see the matchmaker in hopes of marrying into a well-off family. However, she ruined the test and failed in the eyes of her family. Meanwhile, the Huns were in the midst of invading China, so the Chinese emperor started a new conscription and Mulan’s father was ordered to fight alongside the army. I believe that the movie hides gender inequality by hiding it with underlying messages of women inaptitude. The song, A Girl Worth Fighting For, reinforces typical feminine traits, while the song, I’ll Make a Man out of You, highlights the typical masculine traits. However, many queer theorists would also applaud the film for supporting the fact that gender is just a bodily performance by showing examples of how gender can be taught (Fung). At the end of the movie, Mulan goes on to show women’s inadequacy by headlining that women are only accepted into society and deemed successful after they have found a suitable husband (Ghencheng). This entire movie was to emphasize gender roles, not the mission to save the country. By looking at all these examples, it can therefore be assumed that the movie Mulan only reinforces gender inequality by showing underlying messages to its audience that verify the theory that women are inferior to
