As she realizes this she is finally released. A dramatic event does occur in which the closest and most influential friend of hers, Lisa, finds the diary Susanna kept throughout this entire experience where she kept all her thoughts she kept in, including her opinions of the other patients. Upon this event, she finally stands up to her mental “interruption” which is Lisa which signifies her final breakthrough. Susanna’s disorder tied all the elements of the movie’s storyline together. From her inability to maintain relationships and to control her own actions under the influence of Lisa, her reaction to finding out her diagnosis, her flashbacks to the events that pushed her into the unstable moods she experienced, to her interactions with patients in the institution helps viewers understand what Borderline Personality Disorder. Unlike the other patients that were shown, she played the role of a patient with this disorder thoroughly and fluently. Girl, Interrupted accurately and effectively gave a depiction of the disorder. Susanna’s actions, interactions, thoughts, and explanations met realities made guidelines for BPD in a great way. Also, the movie did a fantastic job of creating and showing the reasons that Susanna was pushed into her disorder such as having rich parents who expected more out of her than she could give and do and who mostly cared about their own reputations more than they cared about their child. An individual with no background of this disorder or very little knowledge of what the disorder is would learn important keys that correlate with Borderline Personality Disorder. The movie makes sure these keys are explained well whether it is the psychologist speaking with Susanna’s parents or Susanna learning about her disorder from reading her file.
