Movantik should not be added and Amitiza should remain on ACPHS Formulary. Both Movanik and Amitiza are indicated to treat opioid induced constipation, Amitiza is also indicated to treat irritable bowel syndrome constipation (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation. Both Movantik and Amitiza are contraindicated in patients with a suspected or known gastrointestinal obstruction, as well as should be avoided in patients with hepatic impairment. Movantik has the severe risk to cause withdrawal signs or symptoms when the drug is discontinued, a risk Amitiza doesn’t have. Though Amitiza can cause hypotension and increase risk for syncope.
