He plays by his own rules and is hardworking in what he thinks is correct. Their a lot of debates about healthcare right now as the cost has increased significantly for treating patients. A lot of the lower class people can't afford healthcare. Connecting this with the the book, Farmers founded a non profit organization called Partners in Health which treats hundreds of thousands of patients each year in Haiti. I feel like we can learn from Farmers beliefs and principles and apply them here where it actually might help people who don't have access to healthcare.
“If you say, Well, I just think how much could have been done with twenty thousand dollars, you sound thoughtful, sensible, you know, reasonable, rational, someone you really want on your side. However, if you were to point out, But a young attending physician makes one hundred thousand dollars, not twenty, and that’s five times what it cost to try to save a boy’s life—that just makes you sound like an asshole. Same world, same numbers, same figures, same currency.”
This quote really stuck out to me as we can connect to a variety of things. Everything we do today is for money. We go to school to go to college to get a degree so we can work to make money. It's our choice as to what we do with the money. It's a good feeling to give our money to a non-profit organization and help benefit people who are less
