Mountain climbing is a exhilarating annd a energy draining activity but there is more to it then

you think. It also brings out the best in you, it pushes you to limits you've never been before and

you start to figure out what type of person you are. Only the bravest of the bunch will attempt to

climb a mountain. Two of those valiant people climbed a mountain, persevered through extreme

adversity, and accomplished a lifelong dream. Meet, John Krakaeur and Erik Weihnmayer.

dream for John and he finally quit his job that he hated so he can try and change his life by

In contrast, they are carrying out their goal for different reasons,

one man is trying to transform his life and the other is trying to fulfill a dream that no one

believes he can accomplish. Two men with indomitable wills climb a mountain both physically

and mentally, but they are trying to achieve two different goals: one to change his life, and one to

fulfill his life. Certainly, there has to be a substantial reason that would entice John Krakaeur to climb a nine

thousand foot mountain. Climbing the Devil's thumb, John has always dreamed of

doing that since he was a little boy and he believes climbing this mountain will change his life.

Flashing back to his childhood, John said "From the first time I saw it, the picture- a portrait of

the Thumb's north wall- held an almost pornographic fascination for me". This statement shows

that he had an affinity to this mountain since the first time he saw the Devil's Thumb and that's

when his attraction to the mountain started. Imbued with anger, John said "I'd told my boss I was

quitting:","No, Not in a couple of weeks, Steve; right now was more like what I had in my

mind". Attempting to change his life, John quit his job, drove to Devil's Thumb and made

On the other hand, Erik climbed Everest to prove that blind people can do anything they want

if they put their mind to it. In the beginning and until the end, John was fighting the odds,

struggling through the altitude, and overcoming his blindness on his journey up the mountain.

back his crew John started turning his disadvantages into advantages. Of the twenty people in the

clique Erik is the only blind one so his experience was much different from the others. Erik

stated in the passage "Also, the pure oxygen trickling through their masks would flow up and

freeze the lenses clean of their goggles so that they constantly had to remove them to wipe the

lenses clean. Those brief moments when the eyes are exposed to the elements, corneas will

freeze, and the intense rays of the sun reflecting off the snow cause instant snow blindness. Not

once did I ever have to worry about these complications". John's crew had to wear masks

because "if they were exposed to the cold, they could end up being blinded as a result of
