one man is trying to transform his life and the other is trying to fulfill a dream that no one
believes he can accomplish. Two men with indomitable wills climb a mountain both physically
and mentally, but they are trying to achieve two different goals: one to change his life, and one to
fulfill his life. Certainly, there has to be a substantial reason that would entice John Krakaeur to climb a nine
thousand foot mountain. Climbing the Devil's thumb, John has always dreamed of
doing that since he was a little boy and he believes climbing this mountain will change his life.
Flashing back to his childhood, John said "From the first time I saw it, the picture- a portrait of
the Thumb's north wall- held an almost pornographic fascination for me". This statement shows
that he had an affinity to this mountain since the first time he saw the Devil's Thumb and that's
when his attraction to the mountain started. Imbued with anger, John said "I'd told my boss I was

if they put their mind to it. In the beginning and until the end, John was fighting the odds,
struggling through the altitude, and overcoming his blindness on his journey up the mountain.
