Throughout the region and perhaps the country the staple ghost story is the story of a ghostly hitchhiker. “Endless variations on the “vanishing hitchhiker” story are some of the most frequently shared of all community tales across the United States. Whoever started the hitchhiker story in our own region simply proves its persistence in American lore as one of the more widespread… (Thacker 38)”. The false ghosts stories and superstitions are what cause others to question the validity. “Belief in the supernatural is closely akin to belief in religion. Both involve an intensely personal relationship with a preternatural being or design (Henson viii).” It is through careful reading, research, and instinct that one has to weed out the false from the true, but even then it may be difficult to discern. Do spirits walk among us? Are “ghosts” merely a figment of an overactive imagination. These are the questions I ask myself and according to Larry Thacker in an email correspondence with him:
“The more I research and the more I deal with people the less I believe over time. You get a feel for who is telling the truth and who is mistaken over time, and the frequencies of mistaken explanations, in my opinion, are legion. On the other hand, it was my fascination in the beginning with experiences and family stories that started me on the journey. I've had plenty of these run-ins that sustain my belief that we are dealing with more than we can see or understand at the

The book I decided to read was As Strong as Mountains: a Kurdish Cultural Journey, written by Robert L. Brenneman. I wanted to read this book because I did not know any aspects of the Kurdish culture. I enjoy learning about other cultures, and Kurdish is one culture that I had very little knowledge of. In fact, I am not very educated about the cultures within the Middle East in general. This book helped me understand new aspects of the Kurdish culture and their lifestyle.…

Many people are confused about what paranormal actually means. To most, the term can be pictured with pale ghosts and walking zombies or aliens with their bright UFOs. A real definition, however, is explained as: "the scientific study of interactions between living organisms and their external environment that seem to transcend the known physical laws of nature. Parapsychology [the study of the paranormal phenomena] is a component of the broader study of consciousness and the mind" (Rhine 1). This explanation describes it as the study of supernatural and paranormal beings we are unable to see, hear, or use any other sense to locate these spirits.…

Cobb’s text was credible because he included scientific theories and logical reasoning. His purpose was to present the haunting and review its details with modern…

In summary, James presents that anything that is proposed for our belief is a hypothesis and that any question about which of the two hypotheses to accept is a person’s option (Princeton University, n.d.).…

Now in the 21st century we overlook how far this concept stretches back. Looking at the general concept we still view ghosts and the supernatural world the same as many before us have. The recurring theme is unfinished business for the spirit left on earth prohibiting them to move on to the afterlife. The Vane Sisters by Nabokov really reinforces that ghosts come back because of unfinished business.…

In the excerpt from Don’t Believe Everything You Think, Thomas Kida discusses the human belief system and the factors that influence them the most. He exemplifies how our beliefs may correlate to us making poor decisions when it comes to spending money and falling for quackery. Laslty, Kida highlights some major aspects of memory that many are unaware of- the fact that our recollection of past events are not always as accurate as we may believe, and that they are capable of fluctuating based on our feelings, mood, or environment. One of the points Thomas Kida made in this excerpt is the obvious yet so often overlooked fact that we are greatly influenced by the people we surround ourselves with and those we love.…
