Mountain lions eat large mammals such as deer, and smaller mammals such as mice, squirrels, porcupines, raccoons, rabbits and beavers. There are around 30,000 mountain lions in the western part of the US. There is a subspecies of mountain lions called the Florida panthers and they are becoming endangered. The population is less than 100. The mountain lion has the largest range of any mammal in the western hemisphere.

Mountain lions are mostly solitary animals. Mountain lions can very territorial and like to avoid other big cats except during courtship. They might travel very long distances to find prey so it can eat. They will travel anywhere from 10 square miles to 370 square miles. The females range is normally not that large.
