When Mountain House High School was inaugurated, it lacked one of the most crucial elements of the high school experience: clubs. Eager to share my passion for business, I founded DECA to give members exposure to real world working environments, state conferences, and opportunities to present their knowledge. Success was easy to obtain as post-conference enthusiasm spread first amongst members and then the rest of the school.

I was an ambitious sophomore in every way I could be, and this year I have taken my role as Vice President very seriously. I was able to work closely with the other officers to coordinate events and direct the meetings, both crucial aspects of our chapter’s success. Through my DECA experience thus far, I have realized that it is not just a club, and what we do in it does not just stay with us in high school. DECA has been instrumental in my life and I have been enamored of it so…

If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

Looking back a week later, the Young Democrats High School Leadership Academy was nowhere near what I imagined. And I mean that in a good way. I had an idea going into the conference of what I expected out of it: marketing, social media branding, touring, and networking. And yet, in hindsight, YDA HSLA was all of that, but immensely more.…

When asked the question, “what is your biggest accomplishment in the area of leadership,” the same answer comes to mind every time. It is an easy question for me to answer because of the tremendous impact this experience had on my life. In my junior year of high school, the SkillsUSA advisors repeatedly approached me about the SkillsUSA Pennsylvania Western Region Leadership Conference. I didn’t know what it was until they eventually pulled me and a few top students from my school aside and told us about having a “tryout” to see who would best fit to become an officer at the leadership conference. Each of us presented a prepared speech and an extemporaneous speech.…

For my McCandless Project I decided to dress up for a day. Here are some of the things I did in order to complete the look: I curled my hair, I wore heels, a skirt, a collared shirt beneath a sweater, and my glasses, and I wore makeup. When people saw me their initial reaction was almost always a smile whether they knew me or not. Following the smile, they would comment something like, "You look so nice today!"…

There’s a little slice of Heaven in Marshall, Texas, where the sun shines through the pines and the sound of cicadas serenade you throughout your afternoon and the lake shines like a plate of polished silver in the early morning sun. When I first came to Camp Fern, I was on my own. Everyone else had known each other for at least two years, so I was the odd one out. In my cabin there was the usual sort. There was the popular one, the attention seeker, the joker, and the one you love to hate.…

The situation was further complicated by my high school administration’s refusal to grant my request for a debate club because similar clubs already existed. My story should end there, but it doesn’t—not by a long shot. I decided that if I couldn’t open the door, I would drill a hole to get through. After planning the operations and finance of a Speech and Debate Team, I successfully pitched the idea to the communications club and began leading the new team.…

When I was about nine years old, my family was debating about going to Cedar Point the upcoming weekend. I hadn't rode many roller coasters in my life at that time because I was only nine. Of course, trying to be manly, I totally agreed with their decision. My parents told me how big the roller coasters are, and how the roller coasters are some of the biggest in the world. I acted like I wasn't scared, and was talking about how I didn't care about the size of the roller coasters.…

CTSO programs compliment CTE courses and are student-centered clubs, which provide unique opportunities for participants to explore careers and develop their leadership skills. Well known CTSO programs include DECA (business & marketing), FFA (agriculture) and HOSA (health occupations) to name a few. KEY Club, a service and fundraising club, became my focus, and I travelled up the ranks to become the school’s external affairs manager and the service committee chair of the Eastern Canada District. As I introduced more extra-curricular activities into my life, organization became more important -- and I was shocked to see how much it helped me save…
