Mountain Gorilla Argumentative Essay

Decent Essays
Six billion trees are cut down every single year and used for lumber and more commonly paper. One tree produces an average of eight thousand three hundred thirty-three pieces of paper that is that means 49,998,000,000,000 pieces of paper are used each year. When all of these trees are being cut down with machines that create carbon dioxide we are also getting rid of the main things the give us the oxygen that we need to survive. A fantastic way that the United States can cut down on a number of greenhouse gasses in the air is by stopping deforestation.

Hundreds of animals lose their habitats each year due to deforestation. The Mountain Gorilla is in grave danger of extinction along with many others because of deforestation and if it keeps going on so will hundreds of other animals. All of the machines that it takes to pull down trees are completely polluting our air. Just burning one pound of diesel is polluting our air with twenty-two pounds of carbon dioxide.

After ten thousand years of use, wood supplies have been slowly withering to what they are today. It has been difficult to accurately project just how much damage we have done to the world’s forests, but it is roughly estimated that humans have cut, cleared, and burned 46% of the approximate 15 billion acres of original forest cover (Bryant 13); at this rate, considering the rise of computer integrated machinery and our recent boom in population, we will be at half the total amount of trees recommended by eons of natural selection in just a few decades. Without these trees, the balance of nature teeters towards chaos. On top of this, concentrations of carbon dioxide have never been higher. Before the Industrial Revolution, CO2 levels in the atmosphere were measured to be around 280 ppm (part per million), which has since risen to more than 400 ppm (Butler 1).…

Deforestation impacts the environment greatly one effect it does have which impacts the air is an increase in carbon emission from the burning of the forest. Two million acres of the Congo Basin is removed each year which is equivalent to the emissions of one hundred and fifty seven new coal fired power plants. A phenomenon haze may be obvious because of excessive carbon emission that will pollute the air. The haze can cause people to suffer from certain health problems which include eye, nose, throat irritations and lung infections. Logging roads have opened up a wide range of areas to commercial hunting which leads to poaching.…

(Butler, 2012). Humans affect the rainforest in many inadequate ways, such as deforestation and wildfires. “Deforestation refers to the cutting, clearing, and removal of rainforest or related ecosystems into less bio-diverse ecosystems such as pasture, cropland, or plantations.” (Algee). According to National Geographic, during the past 40 years, close to 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest has been cut down.…

The earth’s atmosphere came from gases released by volcanoes on the planet. It contained these three main gasses, CH4 (Methane), Co2 (carbon dioxide) and NH3 (ammonia). The Carbon dioxide fed the plants. These plants then produced oxygen which is a process which continues today. The same applies to NH3 (ammonia) which fungi’s take in then producing one of the main gases which makes up our atmosphere today N (Nitrogen).…

This deforestation causes the loss of habitats for millions of species, even those not discovered yet as well as the acceleration of climate change. Greenhouse gases trap heat, therefor when we extract and burn fossil fuels such as coal, we cause the release of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Another large problem is that losing forests constantly is not making it any better. Clearing the forests also releases large amounts of carbon dioxide. On top of that, plants and trees use it to grow. Worldwide deforestation means we don’t have as many trees to absorb the extra carbon dioxide.…

According to Burroughs tropical deforestation increased from 11.8 million per year in the 1970’s to 15.4 million in 1980s (pg. 98). Deforestation and forest degradation is a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. Forests have a vital role to play in the fight against global warming. Forests and it soil can help absorb and store carbon dioxide and harmful gasses, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and release oxygen (Schimel p.135), but if forests are cleared or disturbed we will lose out on the benefits of having tons of tress. Trees can converse water to air vapor which help reduce heat.…

This issue often goes unnoticed because humans are so caught up in their everyday lives. Many people support only what is best for humans in their lifetime and don’t look at the bigger picture. People fail to consider how their actions affect not only plants and animals in their ecosystem, but future generations as well. Throughout the years we have harmed and destroyed forest ecosystems and everything that lives in them, so it is only fair that we do everything we can to help limit the amount of damage we deal to our forests and wildlife. Deforestation has been around since…
