For seven years I have participated in the Mount Vernon Band program. I started in 5th grade and at first I really didn’t think much of it, at that point in my life I was just glad to be doing something productive with my time. Once I became accustomed to the way band operated I actually felt that I found a place I genuinely wanted to be at. During my time in middle school I really felt band growing on me, it was lively, fun, and filled with an overall sense of dedication to this group. One thing I can always remember any of my instructors saying was, “Practice how you perform,” which is always relevant in anything you do. After my three years in middle school was done, high school came around, and it was a real step forward. Marching Band one semester and Concert Band the next semester. This is when things changed immensely. I met so many people that were willing to help others grow as musicians and people, I can remember looking up to many people, searching for the best ways to improve. The sense of teamwork was strong with many people, but with many groups there are always the ones that try to ruin it for everyone else. If it weren’t for some people that helped me, I might’ve left, but I didn’t, because I couldn’t just up and leave this team, this family that we were all apart of. Tenth grade was the hardest, we all lost someone dear to us. Someone we all knew was killed in what was seen at the time a car accident. This shocked every single one of us, but we grew much more as a group because of it, since we all came together when we were all at our lowest. 11th and
