Nat and Arnold glanced at each other and hurriedly followed their stubborn friend while struggling to carry their equipment.
After forty minutes of non-stop walking, Nat and Arnold realized that Matthew was leading them to the back of the monument. Matthew stopped abruptly and his two friends bumped into him and dropped their tools once again. Nat and Arnold were indeed exhausted, but for Matthew, it was just the beginning.
“Voila! The back of Mount Rushmore! Doesn’t look pretty anymore, huh?” Matthew said.
His friends nodded in agreement. The back of Mount Rushmore was a steep, rocky slope with groups of trees surrounding the bottom.
“Well, this side’s easier to climb than the front, but it’ll still be difficult,” Nat said.
Matthew grabbed the rock climbing gear from Nat’s hands and started securing himself with clips and ropes. “Let’s go!”
Arnold and Nat secured themselves as well and the three started climbing up the slope. The task was very difficult, of course, and the added weight of the three paint buckets burdened them.
