There are three main types of volcanoes, stratovolcano, shield volcano, and cylinder cone volcano; both Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Pelee are stratovolcano. Although both are the same types of volcano, they have many differences from the sizes to damages. The Mt. St. Helens’ eruption in 1980 was level 5 of VEI (Volcanic Explosivity Index), the level 5 eruption occur once in a century with a volume of 1 cubic kilometers. Mt. St. Helens eruption made greater size of eruption than Mt. pelee’s according to VEI. However the Mt.pelee’s total financial cost was $5,508,351.82 (in today’s value) and Mt. St. Helens’ was $2,877.9, as it is shown, Mt. Pelee’s damages was greater. The cost of damages are related to the loss of life; the cost is caused by human. There were early warnings of eruption in Mt. St. Helens and people who lived in nearby cities escaped before the eruption and also there were some people who refused to escape, which was 57 people who got killed. Thus the proper behavior and proper knowledge of people hugely decreased the damages. But before the eruption of Mt. Pelee, people did not cared about the eruption, though they were warned; they did not know much about volcano and they underestimated the damages of it to cause a greater amount of damages than it
