Mount Of Olives Summary

This story map was adequate as a cartographic visual communication tool. It had personal narratives on all the slides and also included a couple of pictures along with a video to further explain the slide. I am interested in religion so I thought this story map was very interesting as I was able to learn about the sites that are important to Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. I was somewhat able to traverse through Jerusalem, however, it would have had more of an impact if the author was able to present the locations in a street view rather than just an overview of the area. Also, captions were missing on all the pictures along with the source of where the picture was taken from. The author was able to deliver a message about the local area as the Temple Mount, Western Wall, and the Mount of Olives had dilemmas that had to be publicly addressed and to increase awareness. …show more content…
UNESCO has decided that these two sites will be called by its Arabic name, thus, ignoring any Jewish connections to these sites and inciting anger in all of the Jewish people. The Mount of Olives is another site that is important in all three religions as it is a sacred burial site. Unfortunately, the Mount of Olives is often a target for vandalism and the destruction of its tombs. Overall, this story map had a lot of good points as it was neatly organized, had a slideshow of pictures, and included videos, yet, I believe it would have been a good idea to allow a street view of each site rather than a bird’s eye

Jennings takes readers on a world tour of geogeeks from the London Map Fair to the bowels of the Library of Congress, from the prepubescent geniuses at the National Geographic Bee to the computer programmers at Google Earth. Each chapter delves into a different aspect of map culture: highpointing, geocaching, road atlas rallying, even the "unreal estate" charted on the maps of fiction and fantasy. He also considers the ways in which cartography has shaped our history, suggesting that the impulse to make and read maps is as relevant today as it has ever been.…

In Chapter 1 of American Odysseys, Timothy Shannon and David Gellman describe the civilizations and dispel some of the myths about America and Africa before the Europeans made contact with either of those places. I found several ideas in this chapter interesting, the modern social problems that have very ancient roots. The first is race relations and the origins of slavery. Chapter One opens with the story of an educated, runaway slave named Ayuba, who eventually earns his freedom through the kindness and generosity of Europeans who when hearing of his plight, raised money to buy his freedom and send him home to Africa. His picture was printed in London newspapers, donors sent gifts, and he visited the royal family.…

Some religions in the documents presented focused on social behavior in the world, some were very spiritual and did not revolve around this world, and some of these ideas are expressed through artwork of certain religions. Certain religious attitudes from 600 B.C. to 600 C.E. had similar beliefs while others were very different. For example, Christianity is monotheistic while other religions such as Hinduism are polytheistic. The religions also had different views of life after death, or if there even was life after death. They were all similar in that they all instilled good and peaceful moral ideas for all of its members to follow.…

Christianity and Judaism was a big deal in Roman and Greek culture during the period of the New Testament. Religion seemed to be the center of many conflicts and separation between civilizations during this time. The birth of Jesus brought in a lot of controversies within Hellenistic cultures and therefore we see many influences of the new covenant in several of the sculptures and art work created by Greco-Roman artists. Going to the Getty Villa, I was able to find many connections between the collection of Greco-Roman antiquities—including the sculptures and even the general atmosphere of the museum—and the historicity of the New Testament. Driving into the Getty Villa It is hard not to note the stone pavement which makes for a bumpy ride.…

The history behind the construction of the Dome of the Rock at its location is not surprising; not only is it located in a city that is significant to Muslims and Jews alike, but it is also built on top of one of the most sacred sites in both Islam and Judaism. The Dome of the Rock is situated in the heart of the old city on the historical site of both Solomon’s Temple and the second Temple--a location labeled by the Jews as Temple Mount (Grabar 38). In early Islamic Jerusalem, the small Jewish population of the city was once permitted to pray at the site (Peters 194). After the construction of the Dome of the Rock, however, the atmosphere of the area changed (Peters 194). Jews who were temporarily allowed to enter the Temple Mount area as…
