Mount Everest Simulation Reflection

Throughout the course of group interaction we have been assigned two simulations: the Mount Everest mid-term project and the “Judgment in Crisis” simulation. Each simulation was completed in our specific groups; my group consisted of Megan, Naomi, Tate, Natalie, and Darcy. In each of the simulations we worked well as a team, and also had some downfalls; however, we overcame the problems that arose in our group as well as the simulations in which we had to do. In the beginning of the Mt. Everest Simulation we struggled as a team, due to the fact that we all had different information, and we needed to communicate to exchange information in regards to the simulation. However, once we discovered this we immediately changed our approach and worked as a group. Through this downfall of the first simulation …show more content…
In the first simulation we had technological issues in the beginning, which frustrated our group and created a tension in the beginning, which then turned into a stronger group bond, and connection. This was the moment in which our group actually became a team. We used this set back to our advantage. Although we had some set backs we technology we still had positive incidents with it. An example being that in the first simulation reflection video we had to face time one of our group members due to the fact that she was at a funeral. This worked to our benefit by having all group members present for the video.
Personally I think that during the simulations we worked well as a team due to the fact that we all worked as one and split up the work. The simulations would have bombarded one with a ton of information; even doing the second simulation I was overwhelmed with information. I could not even begin to imagine having five-group members information in one simulation that would be due in such little time. However, I could see how it would be easier to do individually if your team did not work well

The main challenge of this group situation is that there was a sudden rise of conflict among members at the beginning to mid phase of the project. This resulted the possible development of groupthink (Janis, 2008). As a leader in this situation, I would firstly feel lousy and disappointed in myself that I didn’t take note of group’s division and how the meeting could be more inclusive of everyone’s opinion (Chadha, 2016). However, at that point, I would also probably feel confused but yet curious as to why it was suddenly voiced out, hence thought that I should facilitate to explicit the thoughts and feelings of each member to better understand as well.…

As a group, we participated in four task type activities, first being CSI in which we were asked to work together to find who was to be arrested for murder. Second, we had a word generation task through the word hypoallergenic making a list of words individually, then making one team list. Third, we performed a task making an origami frog. All team members had to be finished with the frog before the team was complete and no member could touch the other member’s frog. Lastly, we completed a translation task of a French worksheet and answering four questions after a paragraph of French.…

It appears that for the Mt. Everest simulation it became hard to predict the utility of the vast amount of information for several of the team members. Although most of us usually have no problem ranking the importance of decisions, when asked to do so, our brains don't automatically do this. When we are selectively attending to one activity, we tend to ignore other stimulation, while our attention can be distracted by something else. One of the ways that some of us dealt with the overload was by omission. The thought is simple: since we could not take all the available information, our brains may have decided to just ignore some.…

During the beginning of the simulation our company came out of the gates a little slow, but thanks to some key marketing as well as production changes, we were able to get our shareholder-value all the way up to second in our world. The approach we took was to specialize in the youth and mountain biking segments of the market, which gave us the second most awareness towards our products. Although the approach we used worked pretty well for us, I think offering another youth or mountain bike model would have vastly increased revenue. Will, Vince, and I turned out to be very good fits for one another, we were able to go through the simulation as a unit and make decisions based on the group input of everyone. Will was our unspoken leader, but…

During and after the group project I got a better understanding of NAVAL and a better understanding of my group. For example, Lexi is the leader of the group and Camille is the worker bee meaning that she is the one to go to for the information about the presentation. There were many high points in the group such as when we completed are power point early and when we researched the information. I had a blast working with them. A low point was when the video couldn’t load and we had to start from scratch again.…

Teamwork in this particular task was straightforward and we had no problems in terms of participation and contribution. Having said that there was also no 'social loafing ' within my team, as Latane et al., 1979 argued was a problem in teams, whereby people were louder individually than they were in groups (chapter 6, pg. 180). Rather I felt that everyone had an equal…

Since we were given the freedom to choose our own teammates to form groups of five, we generally chose to team up with our friends. This resulted in a greater camaraderie within the group. The camaraderie among teammates made us felt that we are all part of the group and each of us held responsibility towards the group. Owing to the mutual understanding between teammates, we got to share and consider each other’s thoughts as well as made important decisions together which reduced a great deal of problems and conflicts within the group.…

I personally do not enjoy partaking in group-based assignments based on my own personal negative experiences, although, I do acknowledge the benefits group work can bring. It was highly noticeable to me, that working remotely can be difficult for some students to manage given the lack of existing relationship between members. I, as a team player, was a highly active contributor throughout the creative synthesis projects, who understood my effort would determine not only my own academic outcome but also the outcome of my peers. Although, not all who are trusted with the grades of their peers, take such a responsibility so seriously. Each team member brings different experiences and expectations to the table and therefore, navigating these assessments can be somewhat treacherous if team members are not on the same page.…

“As important as the participation of group member is to group synergy, no one wants to encourage participation from members who are obnoxious or bent on sharing misinformation”. (J. Dan Rothwell, pp 276). 3 out of 5 group members were only focused on finishing their portion of the work, which complicated the whole project because it has to be done by the member who proposed the change. Low participation is the problem I felt that we encounter in this group project. I was fully motivated, and willing to spend more time with it; however, not all members were doing effective communications to follow through.…
