Mott Haven is a community district in the South Bronx. Mott Haven attracts new immigrants from diverse cultures due to its affordability, economic opportunities, and its access to cultural institutions (“Mott Haven – Choice Neighborhoods Initiative”, 2014). In 1849 Jordan Mott purchased the land of what is now known as Mott Haven. He purchased the land for workers’ homes to support his iron works business on the Harlem River at East 134st (“Mott Haven – Choice Neighborhoods Initiative”, 2014). In the 1900’s East 138st had become the main industrial and commercial district in the Bronx. In Mott haven child poverty ranks in at 6th place while Riverdale ranks in at 35th place out of 59 districts. There is a significant difference between the two districts. Although child poverty has decreased in Mott Haven since 2013 by 290 and it has increased in Riverdale by 2,405, child poverty is nearly twice as prominent in Mott Haven than Riverdale (“CCC New York”, 2015). If we compare Mott Haven and Riverdale in terms of children being born into poverty, we can see a considerable difference. Mott Haven ranks in at number 1 for children being born into poverty while Riverdale ranks in at 46th. 82.6% of children born in the Mott Haven district are born into poverty while 53.4% of children born in Riverdale are born into poverty. We can see a significant difference between the two districts; there is a total of 21.9% of children in the Mott Haven district and a total of 21.2% of children in the Riverdale district (“CCC New York”, 2015). There are many non-profit organizations that service the residents of Mott Haven but there are not many within the community itself. East Side Settlement House is one of the non- profit agencies located in the Mott Haven area. This organization is located 337 Alexander Avenue Bronx, NY 10454. The mission statement of this organization is “We believe that education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their community. Our focus is on critical developmental periods – early childhood and adolescence – and critical junctures – points at which people are determined to become economically independent. We enrich, supplement and enhance the public school system and place college within reach of motivated students. We provide services to families in order that other family members may pursue their educational goals. We provide technology and career readiness training to enable students to improve their economic status and lead more fulfilling lives.” This organization moved to Mott Haven in1962. East Side Settlement House was established in 1891 in the Upper East Side in Manhattan where it later moved to Mott Haven. There are 400 full and part-time teachers, social workers and other experts that serve 8,000 individuals from 18 program
