Motorcycle Technician / Mechanic
Job description: Motorcycle mechanics repair and maintain the bikes that people bring into their shops. Some motorcycle mechanics may also work on all- terrain vehicles, motor scooters, and snowmobiles. Motorcycle mechanics usually follow a checklist to find out which parts are operating normally and which aren't, when maintaining a bike. If a motorcycle breaks down completely, a mechanic uses various techniques to assess the problem. Common hand tools they use are power drills, pliers, screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches. Often, they are required to purchase their own hand tools. The company will usually supply uniforms, and the more expensive tools. These tools can be dangerous and the mechanics are at a risk of injury when working. Mechanics typically work a 5-day 40-hour week. Depending on the shop, they may work evenings and weekends. In the spring and summer when people typically use their motorcycles more, mechanics are usually busier with repairs. However, for areas that have cold winter weather, some mechanics may work less than 40 hours a week. Mechanics may be laid off during slow periods if their shop does not service other types of machines. This is a reason why some shops in cold areas often learn to service snowmobiles so that they can keep working all year. Knowledge of other small engines such as boats, or all-terrain vehicle engines also help ensure regular work. Ownership of a repair shop is a possibility for a mechanic with business skills. Being a motorcycle mechanic also helps prepare for running an auto parts store, motorcycle dealership, or service
