Motives In The Civil War

As I mentioned earlier, McPherson, in his book, attempts to figure out the motives of the men who fought in the civil war. What drove them to fight for as long and as viciously as they did. Over the course of the book he goes over some very reasonable and interesting motives that these soldiers had. One of the main things possessed by, both, the Union and the Confederacy was ideology. By ideology, McPherson means, that both opposing parties fought for liberty, the Confederacy that fought for liberty of Southern whites who believed they were being threatened by the rule of the North and the Union that fought for liberty given by their constitution which they believed was being threatened by Southern secession.
