Sidra Zimmerman Ministry Project The People and the Situation As was first mentioned in my ministry group project proposal, the group I chose was my own small group. When the project first started, it consisted of roughly 10 men and women, most members of my Southern Baptist church who meet weekly to suss through the week’s sermon together. Interestingly enough, most of us had been raised in some semblance of a Christian home, though our experience within that “Christian” community varied.…
From personal experiences I have had a counselor who could not separate the church from the counseling. She would bring in religious aspects the few times I went to her, and it was not something I brought up myself. Yes, I chose to go to such a place, however I did not know that religion was going to be the main theme of the sessions with this particular counselor. That experience has colored my view of counseling in religious aspects in such a way that I struggle with believing that counselors can keep their personal values of religion out of the session. Dwight could also struggle with the clients who come from outside of the congregation in keeping his personal values out of the session.…
In summary, the scenario I used shows that the initial resistance of Amy can also lead to resistance by Tom in a counseling. However, all resist change. Therefore, as counselors it is our duty to future Christian counselors we need to have a strong theological background as…

The author of this article focuses on how to use motivational interviewing and how it can be used as a successful intervention tool during certain stages of addiction. These techniques help the patient to become aware of their issue and what behaviors trigger their use of addictive substances. Motivational Interviewing allows the patient to be motivated toward acknowledging that they should change and then making the decision to start the steps to achieve cessation of substance abuse. In Richard Lavoies the Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning on the tuned-out child proves techniques and strategies based on six possible motivational styles that will revolutionize the way parents and teachers inspire kids with learning disabilities to succeed and achieve. It promotes better communication, improvement through goals, and respect of the student. It provides an idea rather than the reward system. I think the value of this book lies in teaching people that what motivates them does not necessarily motivate their kids or any other person for that matter. That some information provided for parents should be read by the teachers and some provided with practical information only for teachers to use in their classrooms should…

For this discussion, I read the article titled Children and Trauma: A post -Katrina and Rita Response and I watched the 60 minutes video on the Sandy Hook school shooting. Both man- made and natural disasters bring about many questions and need psychological help to process. Feelings of insecurity, powerlessness, confusion, and depression were common, as homes, workplaces, and schools were destroyed or left uninhabitable. Discuss how we might understand and/or respond to crisis and trauma from a faith informed perspective while utilizing sound counseling methods. We can respond to crisis and trauma by showing love and compassion just as Jesus did for all of us when he died on the cross.…

Summary Mark McMinn the author of “Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality in Christian Counseling” goes into great depth in explaining the integration of psychology, theology, and spirituality in counseling. McMinn first published his book in 1996 and since then he has updated and revised it in 2011 with reliable information that can be used by the counselor (McMinn, 2011). One area that was especially helpful, was the authors focus on making sure that there is a solid foundation in theology and making sure there is adequate training in using Scripture in a counseling practice. One problem with in Christianity is the lack of knowledge when it comes to Scripture and theology. Many just accept what they are told when it comes to theology and Scripture instead of taking time to actually learn about theology and how to properly quote or use Scripture while they are talking. Due to this, Scripture can be misused or misquoted and shows a lack of knowledge of the users part. The author’s advice to make sure a person is adequately trained in these areas is not only necessary but also…
