Leaders primary objective is to increase the performance of their subordinates either by extrinsically or intrinsically motivated incentives (Cerasoli, Nicklin, & Ford, 2014). Extrinsically behaviors are guided by gains and losses while intrinsically behaviors are directed by personal enjoyment (Cerasoli, Nicklin, & Ford, 2014). This paper explores Locke and Latham (2004) view on the connections between motivation, personality, and decision-making. Next, the essay compares Rousseau (1985) and Locke & Latham (2004) research on motivation. Last, discuss potential avenues for future research on motivation, personality, and decision-making.
Congruence between Motivation, Personality, and Decision Making
Motivation, according to Locke and Latham (2004) is an internal factor that drives a person to act in a certain way. However, people are different and respond differently according to their personality. Hattrup and Jackson (1996) pointed out three approaches to personal differences. The first is a person-based approach which is about examining the differences between individuals. Next, the situational approach which Hattrup and Jackson noted as how people act or react in certain situations. Third, the interactional approach examines how people would react in a predictable situation. Depending on the individual’s personality and the method that is used to motivate, causes the person to make particular decisions.
