Motivation Methods Paper Motivation by definition means to give an incentive for action. Motivation is a large factor in either the success or failure for a company. Unfortunately, motivating people is not an exact science. There is no one way, no worksheet to fill out, or no set formula or calculation. Money may motivate one employee of a company. Someone else may appreciate personal recognition for performing a job well done or may work harder if he or she has a type of equity in the business. Employee motivation comes down to one basic ideal: discovering out what the employees want and finding a way to give it to them or to enable them to earn it. Empowerment is giving employees more responsibility and decision-making authority. This increases their control over the tasks for which they are responsible, and aides in equipping them to carry out those tasks. This will result in diminishing the feelings of frustration for the individual held accountable. The direction of energy moves from self-preservation to improved task accomplishment. Feedback both positive and performance improving, is vital to continuous improvement. Feedback when done well, motivates, and inspires individuals to move toward using more of their potential. Feedback needs to be timely, specific, and presented in such a way that the individual is clear about what behaviors or skills he or she needs to modify or continue using to improve performance. In some companies, employees with creative ideas do not express them to management for fear that their input will be ignored or criticized. Organizations and their employees suffer when the working environment has emphasis put on company approval. When upper management gives employees the opportunity to use their ideas to improve a job, service or idea, the power to create motivates the employees. This also benefits the organization in giving it a more flexible workforce, using the experience and expertise of its employees, and increasing the exchange of ideas and information among employees and departments.
