Motivation In Night

Anne Frank, a Jewish teenager who was forced to go into hiding during the Holocaust, once said, “If we bear all this suffering and if there are still Jews left, when it is over, then Jews, instead of being doomed, will be held up as an example.” (goodreads.com). This quote shows how Jews will forever be displayed as an example for their immense strength and bravery. Anne Frank, along with the other survivors of the Holocaust, had some source of motivation to make it out of such a horrific event. In the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel and the film Life is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni, they show many examples of how in the worst circumstances, there was only one thing that gave people strength to keep going, family. Throughout the novel, multiple examples are given where Elie’s dad provided Elie with hope and motivation to survive. For example, when Elie says, “My father's presence was the only thing that stopped me...What would he do without me? I was his only support.”(86). In this instance, just the presence of his father kept him living. Elie knew if he dies, his father wouldn't have any reason to live either. The Germans could rob Elie from all of his material possessions, but the one thing that could never be taken away is Elie's relationship with his father. This shows that Elie and his father will make it out of the camp, together. Another example is how Elie and his dad motivate each other when they took turns sleeping to stay alive. This night the weather was terrible and possibly deadly if someone fell asleep. To protect each other, Elie and his father took turns sleeping to keep each other living. This made Elie push his dad to get through the rough times and vice versa. This tested their self-perseverance and determination, but once they saw the other person fighting, they fought even harder. Elie and his father’s relationship is one of the biggest reasons that Elie made it out of the camp

I went to look for him” (Wiesel 106). This proves how Elie was supposed to take care of his father because he was getting weak, the fact that Elie left him was taking a toll on him because he went back to look for him. Being with his father, Elie’s feelings were slowly going away the more and more his father was sick.…

These indecisive thoughts on whether he should try to help his father or ignore it and survive just like everybody else during these times. Elie and his father were side by side for the majority of the holocaust and they constantly aided each other. But once his father had fallen ill, Elie often questioned whether his father was worth holding onto. This was a normal thing in the holocaust and the reason Elie regretted having those thoughts was because in jewish culture, family was a key part of it and wishing death upon your loved ones was shameful. But the indifference of whether or not he lived after the idea of his father 's passing allowed him to quickly adopt the idea of his own death.”…
