There are a lot of hardworking students here at CHHS, but one student who has been motivated and focused since she started school is Samantha Locher who is currently a junior. Samantha has described her years in high school so far as a growing experience. She is overjoyed to meeting many new friends and getting to learn new things at CHHS. As she prepares to become a senior this coming year, she is most excited for college and to know that there are greater things she can accomplish in the future. The best college students learn very quickly that the best thing that they can do is never give up, discover something new every day, work with the community as best as they can and show great respect for the learning community. They also learn that service to the community is essential and they do this by helping others and making them stronger learners. Although Bain’s book does a very good job of explaining all of these values, the one that stands out to me is that of discovery. As someone who is not a traditional student just getting to UL has been a massive achievement for me. I left school at a young age, thirteen, due to health reasons. However returning to education was always something that I wanted to do. Though getting to University was a goal that often seemed unattainable, now that I have done it I feel that all avenues are wide open to me and that I can now be defined by my future instead of my past. When a student is intrinsically motivated to do well in a particular class or subject, he or she will be more inclined to put in hard work and effort into attaining his or her academic goal. A lot of different factors add into my ability to succeed at Penn State, such as being intellectually curious. After taking Chemistry my freshman year, I took such a strong liking in the class and all of the topics covered, that I now want to continue those concepts at Penn State by majoring in Chemistry. Since I was 18 years old I’ve had a burning desire to attend college; now at 46 years old the dream of a college education has become a reality. Although with a wife and two wonderful sons; and a full time job it has been a very exciting and also challenging period in my life. One of the most exciting aspects for me starting college is learning new things from module to module, and applying the lessons learned into daily use, within the course studies and at my current company. The struggled in school academics were never a positive piece of my life. Repeated year after year I came home with a report card with C’s and D’s. Originating from a small town was unquestionably discouraging for the reason that I was surrounded by shiftless, narrow-minded people who let life get in the way of their success. My community had reachable goals and realistic dreams, but it was rare for someone to actually achieve then. My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life.
