Motifs In A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man

Improved Essays
In the story of A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man, several underlying motifs sometimes make up an almost subliminal, sometimes very obvious message of music, flight, and sin. These motifs are what I believe really make this story hard hitting and relatable for some of us.
Music is apparent in how Stephen turns things into little songs like at the very beginning when Dante is threatening him. He repeats it in a quick cute little tune. He also sang when he was dancing with his mother and later on when he says his prayers at moments when he is religious. This really shows his appreciation of language as a writer from early on by being able to twist the words in a very comfortable fashion maybe to make sense to him or maybe to have fun. Maybe even sometimes to annoy those who are talking to him. I do this very often myself so I feel like it could be either of those things because I sing words people say to help me remember and to pester.

The story tells of of Daedalus building a labyrinth to house a minotaur that kills any who enter. Daedalus and his son Icarus escaped the king who had Daedalus make the labyrinth on wax wings he had made but Icarus flew too close to the sun thinking he was a god only to have melted his wings and died. Stephen wants to leave Ireland much like Daedalus and his son but must keep in mind that he has to balance the need for leaving with his ability to write. This is also funny because at the same time he represents Daedalus, Stephen also represents Icarus because he is very full of himself and ignorantly

The rise of popularity in Bare-knuckle prize fighting mirrored the complications, contradictions, and swift changes in society of 19th century United States, as Elliot Gorn interprets in his monograph The Manly Art: Bare-Knuckle Prize Fighting in America. Despite the fact that prize fighting was never actually legalized, its popularity continued to grow from its introduction to America- as a result of Irish immigrants- and resulted in being one of the most popular sports throughout the nineteenth century, especially among working class males. Bare-knuckle prize fighting was not just a simple battle between two men, the fighting symbolized honor, class, and prowess. Although prize fighting tended to glorify violence in society, its cultural and social significance can not go unnoticed.…

Charles Emile-August Carolus-Duran’s piece titled Portrait of an Artist in her Studio represents the action of a women painting. This piece was made in the late 19th century (c. 1880) and was considered one of Carolus-Duran’s great society portraits. The piece’s present location is the La Salle University Art Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and its original location was *****. This portrait is oil on canvas, and the “quick, loose brushwork” technique can be accredited to masters such as Diego Velasquez and Edouard Manet (placard.) Just as the painting suggests, the painting’s subject is an artist, many say Carolus-Duran’s wife or mistress, in her studio.…

The father best exemplifies this when he states “You forget what you want to remember and you remember what you want to forget” (McCarthy 12). This shows that compared to the child, the father does not seem to possess a need for knowledge. The father has gone through losing his wife and he is currently fighting to keep him and his son alive. The father does not look into the past because he knows that the best thing for him and his son to do is to just keep moving forward. While the need for knowledge can be a good thing for the child, sometimes it can be hurtful for the father.…

Fine storytelling, no matter how short the story, can aid in teaching complex lessons in a simple manner. Some stories teach these lessons in the form of a theme through the use of symbolism. “Popular Mechanics” by Carver and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Stetson are tales of grim relationship problems featuring symbolism to portray themes of everyday life. Both stories quickly reveal that life for the main characters is problematic. Both stories feature problems between two different couples, one being a marriage, the other being a mother and father.…

Little, black dots on a page. Essentially, that is all written music is. It’s really all that any form of writing is. A meaningless code in motion will stay in motion, utterly meaningless until an educated eye interprets its significance. Yet, once this meaning is deciphered and most importantly, communicated, those formerly insignificant dots of ink – whether they be notes, poetry, prose, or paint – create a world of artistic possibilities.…

Furthermore, it looks like towards the smaller rocks people were swept from the waves to the land.…

Vincent Van Gogh: The Portrait of Dr.Gachet The Portrait of Dr. Gachet by Vincent Van Gogh is sorrowful, but alluring. Iam drawn to this piece because of the heavy brush strokes and the usage of dark colors, and because of this I automatically knew there was more to the story as I analyzed-- from the subject's facial expression to the purple flower lying on the table. I began to know more about this painting’s story as I investigated Vincent’s past and other works.…

The painting I chose was Frank Stella’s “Flin Flon VIII”. It is an acrylic piece on canvas characterized by a mixture of curving and straight lines that interlock, vibrant colors, and an emphasis on the circle in the middle of the canvas. A huge quantity of negative space is present in the painting and the painting emits a smooth texture. The painting is one hundred and eight inches squared, making it one of the largest paintings in the San Diego Art Museum. Its size projects itself on the viewer overwhelming them with its color and size.…

Placing an object instead of an feeling or idea can sometimes be the right way to help the writer rediscover things he/ she didn’t know about their life or even help the reader interact with the essay by engaging them into finding the meaning behind the object.…
