Motifs And Foiling Oberon And Titania

Shakespeare illustrates the theme by using motifs and foiling Oberon and Titania. Only Titania and Oberon are equally matched compared to other couples. In the play, “jealous Oberon” (2.1.24) fails to take the changeling boy the first time because “[Titania] perforce withholds the lovèd boy” (2.1.26). He then decides to use the potion. The potion is a motif that represents power and deceit. To explain, the love potion gives Oberon an upper hand in the relationship. By using the potion’s power on Titania, he manipulates her into loving “some vile thing” (2.2.40). In the end, Oberon gets exactly what he wants by exerting power to change love. This makes him different from Titania. Although Titania refuses to give up the boy like Oberon, she doesn’t act. This contrast develops Oberon’s character. It shows his need to control love. This leads him to get more power over Titania and thus, he can change love.

To continue, the use of irony and the idea of rape helps demonstrates power manipulating love. Obviously, Titania did not give consent to Oberon to enchant her. By

Words that rhyme sound alike and in unison, therefore, rhymes represent unity and couples. Interestingly, Oberon only rhymes when he is using the potion to pair people up. In fact, the first instance in which Oberon rhymes is when he uses rhyme to tell Puck of his plan to make Titania fall in love with a beast. In continuation, he also uses rhyme when he couples Demetrius and Helena as well as when he reverses Puck’s mistake. When he reverses the spell on Lysander, Lysander goes back to loving Hermia. Finally, the last time Oberon uses rhyme is when he releases Titania from the spell after getting the changeling boy. Without the changeling boy causing the two to quarrel, he couples himself with Titania. Ultimately, Oberon exemplifies the theme by exerting control over love and rhyming when he changed the course of

He tries to manipulate the situation so that Helena gets her love, Lysander and Hermia stay together, and he can teach Titania a lesson on how to be a submissive and adoring wife. However, just as the laborers' play turns a tragic drama into a comedy, so does Oberon's when Puck accidentally puts the love-potion on the eyes of the wrong man. And yet Oberon's play also serves a counter purpose to the laborers' play. While the laborers' awful performance seems to suggest the limit of the theater, Oberon's play (or the events of A Midsummer Night’s Dream) altered the lives of the same mortals who mock the laborers' play, suggests that theater really does have a magic that defies…

However, earlier in the play he spoke loving words to her referring to her as “love” and “my Hermia”, “Keep promise, love. Look, here comes Helena,” (Shakespeare 1.1.182) His feelings for her changed overnight due to the potion, revealing that no matter how much he may have loved her before, she could lose his love just as easily. Shakespeare is trying to convey love as silly or joke worthy in this comedy, as he has Lysander foreshadow the bumpy course the four lovers will go through, “The course of true love never did run smooth,” (Shakespeare 1.1.136) Shakespeare also includes another pair of lovers, the fairy king Oberon and the fairy queen Titania.…

Human emotions and human nature are certainly forces to be reckoned with. When allowed to run awry or shine through, they can lead to less than desirable situations. For example, in the search for power, one may make rash decisions to obtain said power. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, written by William Shakespeare, focuses on a power struggle between two fairies, a mischievous servant, a group of star crossed lovers, and some disorderly rude mechanicals. Oberon, the fairy king, and his wife Titania get into a spat over who is to take possession over a small changeling child.…

Helena loves Demetrius but he does not love her back. This then leads to having an imbalance of love; one women has no man to love her while the other has too many. Also, the developed and balanced love shared between Theseus and Hippolyte displays contrast when compared to the relationship of Oberon and Titania, whose love is a quarrel and leaves the world around them in shambles. A Midsummer Night’s Dream claims that marriage shows the true and utter fulfillment of romantic love. Shakespeare has a way of pulling the audience out of the emotional aspects of this play and instead uses the characters to poke fun at the agony and annoyances of those who are in love.…

In the film, Titania has a much less subdued response. Rather than loathing Bottom’s visage, as Shakespeare’s text states, she loathes Oberon’s visage. When they hold hands as the text states, in Davies’ film Titania offers her hand to Oberon, who places his hand in hers, suggesting that she is not now his subordinate anew but that they are partners (if perhaps Oberon is not her subordinate). Further, she also speaks regarding the morning powers which are Oberon’s lines in Shakespeare’s text. Understanding their relationship not as a romantic and pleasant one but rather a relationship of convenience seeming to focus on caring for mortals rather than each other is logical, especially considering Titania’s kiss at the end of the film, not with Oberon but instead the lady Hippolyta.…

How Shakespeare uses contrast to present the idea of love is that he contrasts the flirtation between Maria and Toby, and the practical criteria that Toby applies to Andrew as a suitor (that he is tall and rich), both contrast with the flowery love-melancholy Orsino exhibited in act 1 scene 1. This also is the use of characterization not just the use of contrast. Shakespeare uses characterization to get the idea that each character will love another differently than everyone else, such as how the Duke implies his love for Olivia based on her appearance versus the flirtation between Maria and Sir Toby.…

In Hamlet and Songs of Experience, both Shakespeare and Blake portray love as a destructive force. Whereas Shakespeare expresses the detrimental and restrictive effect of love through the character's duty, Blake conceptualises love as an emotional act performed for the well-being of others. Similarly, both manage to convey how a character's actions can be manipulated and dictated by love to cause havoc. Gertrude is a character that has difficulty expressing her love for both Claudius and Hamlet as by showing love to either of them she is not fulfilling her duty to the other.…

Shakespeare develops the idea that love leads to rash decisions through the behavior of the characters Juliet and Romeo. Juliet’s deep love for Romeo is the primary reason for her to make rash decisions in the play. First, after meeting Romeo at the Capulet feast, Juliet is beguiled by him. However, she is very distressed to discover he is a Montague, and the son of her family’s rival. Alone and upset, she says in her soliloquy, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name, /…

Oberon’s involvement in the love lives of Hermia, Lysander, Helena, and Demetrius’ relationships shows the readers that true love takes place in the story, since the relationships are meddled with and finally mended after Oberon’s servant and troublemaker Puck messes up. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, true love seems to exist because of the fact that it is influenced by a divine being, the lovers triumph their hardships together, and both couples strive to love even when the other does not love them back. First off, true love can be affected by a divine being, and this is shown in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is because of the fact that Oberon is a divine figure who has lots of godly powers as a fairy king.…

The symbols used in A Midsummer Night’s Dream each portray the different definitions of love; in each instance, love is a passionate force, able to blind some to the reality of the world. Some, such as Helena and Titania, are still blinded to the truth of the situation. Both are willing to overlook manipulative, abusive men in order to be loved. Hippolyta submits to love in order to appease a conqueror, and she realizes she can love him back despite the situation. Hermia receives the sweetest love of all.…

However, even the rude mechanicals and Puck are symbolic of one of the two themes. The lovers can be associated with either one of the themes, depending on the point in time in the story. For instance, Theseus and Oberon are symbolic of orderliness throughout the story, but Hermia and Lysander are not as easily defined. Theseus attempts to resolve the quarrel concerning the arranged marriage of Hermia and Demetrius in a calm, equitable fashion. Similarly, Oberon seeks to stop the chaos that ensues in the forest after Puck’s mistakes.…

The difficulty of love is one of the center themes of many of William Shakespeare’s comedy plays. Many ways he emphasizes the theme of the play is by creating doubles through the characters. Doubling in literature is essentially mirroring aspects like plot, setting and characters in the play to emphasize a theme. In A Midsummer Nights Dream by William, Shakespeare doubling is used to show the characters difficulties with love. The instant love seen with the young couples, fatherly love seen with Egeus, and brotherly love with the mechanicals are all difficult and complicated relationships.…
