It all started in Argentina when Military troops decided to take over and run the government. They got rid of everything from political parties, labor unions to all universities (Agosin & Franzen). The military wanted to take away everything from the people especially their voices. Without any of those organizations the people will have a harder time speaking up against the government since they have no kind of leadership. The government did not want them to know what the real reason was for taking down those institutions so the military said this was “to restore order and peace of the country” (Agosin & Franzen). Because the Mothers of La Plaza de Mayo was the movement that got the ball rolling the Argentina government went back to a democratic based government. Which later helped the women who were fighting for their basic rights were finally heard. Today if we go to Argentina there is no discrimination against women like there was there was during the 1970’s. Children are now being protected by government laws, women do not need their husband’s signatures to move their children to other schools or to get an operation. People are getting equal pay for equal work not giving priority to the men. Women are now also offered day care centers and retirement benefits that they would not have gotten in the 1970’s. This all contributed to the celebration of international women’s day
