History and Background of the Problem
The role of women in the workforce is very significant because they now make up around half of the workforce (Ranji & Salganicoff, 2014). Traditionally, women in the workforce are not given the same opportunities and benefits as men holding the same positions. The role of women in the workforces greatly expanded throughout history. Women moved from homemakers to working women during the time of the wars. Almost every historical war has expanded the job market to give women more opportunities that were once only reserved for men. However, these women were not given the same wages or benefits. One of the biggest issues right now is the lack of paid time off to care for their sick children. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, there is a large difference in the percentage of mothers who take time off to care for their children compared to the percentage of fathers (2014). Despite the differences in men and women benefits, there are some women who do receive similar benefits as their male counterparts. However, the overwhelming amount of women who took a day off work to care for their child were not given paid time off.
Statement of the Problem
There is a lack of resources available to women in the workforce who have sick children. If we do not help these mothers find these resources, then the disparities between genders in the workforce will continue to exist. The financial toll, especially on lower income families, indicates that new policies should enacted or fixed. How can we assist these women in getting better benefits? Additionally, what can we do to help these mothers not have to miss work?
