I am writing this letter on behalf of Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD). I like to discuss the issue of driving while intoxicated in New York. Governor Cuomo signed legislation creating the Vince’s Law. This law raises the penalty for offenders who commit three or more DWI’s within fifteen years. I would like to advocate on behalf of Mother’s Against Drunk Driving to combat the Vince’s Law.

Mother’s Against Drunk Driving wants to live in a world without drunk driving. In 2015, 10,265 people died in drunk driving accidents. Approximately 290,000 people reported injuries in accidents involving drunk drivers. Each death, injury, and crash impacts families across America. The yearly cost of drunk driving totals 132 billion dollars.

This law is not effective in deterring drunk driving. Why should an offender of DWI have the chance to commit two more crimes? Every two minutes a person is injured in a crash involving a drunk driver. Every day in America, 27 people die because of a drunk driver. Mother’s Against Drunk Driving believes that all individuals charged with DWI should be prosecuted and charged, to the fullest extent of the law. The first conviction of drunk driving would result in a felony charge. The Implementation of legislation to revoke driver’s license for drivers whose blood alcohol limit exceeds the legal limit. The creation of mandatory jail sentences for repeat offenders to deter individuals from drunk driving. These actions would save the lives of family members, classmates, colleagues, and keep the roads safe.

Senators, lawyers, judges, and police officers all have children who drive vehicles. Everyone has to support and protect their families from dangerous situations. Keeping drunk drivers off the road protects your brother, sister, cousin, and children. A safe road makes it easier for your loved one to come home from work and school. Driving drunk is a serious risk to all drivers on the roads. All American citizens must take action to ensure your safety behind the wheel is not compromised. Our lives are at stake, and dismissing this issue will only continue to lose lives on the
