Mothers Against Drunk Driving

You decide to grasp the wheel of a vehicle after being intoxicated with a mind boggling substance. Sip, drive, swerve, hit, kill, are the only things you can mourn as in a flash, a child lay lifeless on the concrete road until it's spirit is released and slaps you across the face for the unfixable mistakes you had made. In 1980, there were 27,000 alcohol related traffic fatalities that had occurred in the United States, with 2,500 in California alone (Phillips). On May 3rd of 1980, that number had risen as the life of Cari Lightner was taken by a repeat drunk driving offender, whose actions caused him to lose control. However, what he didn’t know, was his unforgivable actions were the cause of a life-saving phenomenon. Candy Lightner, Cari’s mother, was infuriated by the tiny amount of consequence the man had received after taking her beloved Cari’s life, and decided that the underestimated laws against drunk driving were not enough to guarantee that the punished killers wouldn't strike again. So, with the help of friends and family, she took charge. On September fifth of 1980, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) took the world by storm when it was …show more content…
Precipitated by the death of the founders child at the hands of a repeat drunken driving offender, MADD began as a grassroots activist movement (Phillips,Melody) created on September 5th of 1980 from the scolded mind of Candace Lightner. In 1980, an intoxicated hit-and-run driver with four previous drunk driving convictions struck and killed Cari Lightner while she walked with a friend in the bike line in California (Phillips, Melody). While traditional murder at the time was usually handled by jail time or execution, impaired drivers typically only received a judicial “slap on the wrist” for driving while intoxicated, even when the action resulted in fatalities (Phillips,

Mothers Against Drunk Driving or MADD was founded in 1980 by Candy Lighter, whose daughter was tragically killed by a drunk driver. MADD is an organization to help reduce drunk driving traffic fatalities. There are numerous anti drunk driving commercials out there, but I believe this on is the best, which is named Best MADD Anti DUI commercial ever on YouTube. It is the best because the organization’s use of ethos, pathos, and logos create an effective call to action for viewers to make more responsible choices. The video contains ethos by stating a few words at the beginning of the video of how much MADD has made a change, but they are honest in saying they still have a long way to go.…

“Backyard Patio” - Here MADD focus on how impaired driving cannot only be dangerous to the impaired person, but can be fatal to others as well. An outdoor birthday party is depicted, and, as the candles on the cake are being blown out, a car drives thorough a wood fence and into the patio. Multiple members of the celebration are shown lying on the ground, while one is calling for help, explaining that at least one person is “not breathing.” MADD again utilizes the method of showing how impaired driving can completely alter an event, and ultimately, people's lives. At one moment, the people pictured are enjoying a birthday celebration, while at the next, at least one person is likely to have been fatally injured.…

“2 drunk 2 care,” the words plastered on Kayla Mendoza’s twitter account just moments before she entered her car. Those words marked the end of two young women’s lives and the end of Ms. Mendoza’s freedom. On November 17, 2013 Ms. Mendoza chose to drink two margaritas with co-workers and get behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated. Her decision led to the death of two 21-year olds, Kaitlyn Ferrante and Marisa Catronio, who fell victim to a deadly car accident on the Sawgrass Expressway. Kayla Mendoza’s tweet “2 drunk 2 care” demonstrates the feeling of invincibility that causes people to get behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated.…

We’re taught to believe what is morally wrong and right to lead our lives. And in doing so, it should allow us to live life based on our morals free from the constrictions of ethical laws brutally enforced upon us. Although James Dillard, a medical resident, acted selflessly to save a drunk man’s life, looking back on it, he regrets risking his future as a doctor to save the man, a selfish act. Dillard’s moral standards as an almost qualified doctor to save the drunk man’s life were morally right.…

For many years, one of the biggest issues nationwide has been the abuse of alcohol by all age groups; however, this is primarily true for the 18-21 year old age bracket. In 1987, Ronald Reagan and his administration pressured states by threatening local funding cuts. His ultimate goal was for a nationwide minimum legal drinking age of 21 (Tooney, et al, 2009). Supporters of this, such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), believed that this law would end drunk driving related deaths. As a counteraction to MADD, the Amethyst Initiative formed.…

The Drinking Age Should Stay at 21 Today, I am here to talk about why the legal drinking age should stay at 21. Many people argue that since 18-year-olds can vote, join the army, and are considered adults, why can’t they order a beer? Alcohol consumption among people under the age of 21 already has shown worse academics, higher rates of binge drinking, and higher risks of developing alcoholism. Lowering the age would only increase these numbers and cause more problems. There is nothing worse than hearing the stories of traffic accidents on the news that involve a drunk driver.…

When the MLDA has been lowered, injury and death rates increase, and when the MLDA is increased, death and injury rates decline”. Since underage drunk driving is the main cause for alcohol related deaths and injuries, the minimum drinking age was increased to from eighteen to twenty-one by president Ronald Reagan in 1984. Wagenaar quoted, “A common argument opponents of a higher MLDA is that because many minors still drink and purchase alcohol, the policy doesn’t work. The evidence shows, however, that although many youth still consume alcohol, they drink less and experience fewer alcohol-related injuries and deaths”. Although some teenagers are still illegally finding a way to consume alcohol, the numbers of fatal accident and injuries are still lower compared to if the minimum drinking age would be at eighteen.…

With this Act in place, any state that allowed person under the age of 21 year old to purchase and publicly possess alcohol was punished by having its annual federal highway allotment cut by ten percent. Many organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving state that since the installation of a MLDA-21, fatally injured drivers ages 16-20, with positive Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) as lowered from 61 percent in 1982 to 31 percent in 1995. They also argue that a raise in the MLDA reduces drinking, problematic drinking, drinking and driving, and alcohol-related crashes among young people. The article titled “Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention & Policy” written by Adam Barry, Michael Stellefson, and Conrad Woolsey goes on to talk about the fact that compared to legal drinkers, underage drinkers are significantly less confident to perform responsible drinking behaviors during their next drinking episode and significantly lower intention to perform responsible drinking behaviors the next time they consume alcohol. That is where the Amethyst Initiative come…

Alcohol impairment is the primary factor in traffic fatalities. In the United States, where drunk driving is among the most common types of arrest made by police, the number of alcohol-related crash deaths is roughly the same as the number of homicides. In addition, vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in young people ages 15 to 20; many of these are alcohol-related”(Center for Problem). Not all of the accidents are tied into drinking and driving, some of the traffic accidents that have caused death in the past, mainly for teenagers, were speed racing, speeding, hit-and-run crashes, aggressive driving, or even driving with a revoked or suspended license. Here are some examples of what harm drinking and drinking could cause, anything from car crashes too getting a very pricey ticket: “drivers, passengers, and pedestrians are killed and injured.…
