The many aspects of power within a novel effectively shape how readers interpret the composer’s distinctive message. A close study of Weapon’s Training by Bruce Dawe, Mother Who Gave Me Life by Glen Hardwood and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley would enable readers to understand how effectively the writer has conveyed aspects of power. Knowledge is a form of power that can lead in many paths and at times, control those who desire it. Similarly, the power to dehumanise an individual can result in one’s loss of identity. Weapon’s Training and Brave New World successfully represents this strong aspect of power through various techniques. Dawe’s use of racist pejorative and colloquial insult, “mob of the little yellows… you can smell their rotten fish sauce breath,” characterises the enemy and allows the recruits on the sergeants’ side to see the enemy not as an individual but as a majority by race, culture and tradition. The sergeant effectively expresses the ability to dehumanise the opposing team by degrading the enemy as they are easier to kill. Similarly, Huxley’s Brave New World effectively conveys the power to dehumanise their people in which rather than acknowledging them as individuals, they are seen as a majority. This is evident through their classification of the Greek Alphabet; “Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon” to imply that the state’s powers lies in the desire of the citizens to conform and to exist as a group not as an individual. This sense of controlling society through technology indicates that those in power in this “Brave New World,” can effectively dehumanise its people. Emotions are the fuel that drives an individual to become a better person and grow to love one another. Because of this, the World State controls the emotions of the individuals in this society.
