Amy tan’s essay “Mother Tongue,” describes day-to-day language barriers she and her mother came across. Until her mother was in the same room as her, Tan did not realize that her and her mother spoke in different types if “Englishes”. Tan understood that many in the world would call her mothers English, broken, or misused. Tan’s mother never saw the professional side of her, and she had never talked with polished English to her mother. She did however pose as her mother many times over the phone and her mother would ask Tan not to be ashamed of how she talked. She used this humiliation as a method to make her grades better in school and soon realized her passion for writing. So she became a writer.
