Mother To Son Poem Comparison

Why do people enjoy poems? People enjoy poems because they tackle very important and controversial topics in a very interesting entertaining way. This review will be comparing two different poems “Mother to Son” and “Little Boy Crying” and will conclude which poem is the best at cultural expression, “Mother to Son” was published in December 1922, and was written by Langston Hughes. The poem is about a mother talking to her son about how he should not give up on life even if it feels nearly impossible to keep going. “Little Boy Crying” was written by Mervyn Morris, and the poem is about a kid who tries to manipulate his father with his crocodile tears into giving him what he wants, but fails miserably and gets struck by the father.

The structure of this poem is extremely different from “Mother to Son” poem.The poem is made up of four stanzas. In each stanza there is a different person’s prospective of the situation, the first stanza was in the father's point of view, the second one was in the kids prospective, the third stanza was in the mother's point of view, the last stanza was either said by the mother or the father. Additional it’s a free verse poem which means it has no rhythm. To make the poem more interesting the writer used allusion to paint a picture of what the kid sees in the second stanza, he referred to the father as a giant ogre going down a long tree and plotting to trap him. Does that sound familiar? it should, the writer used the story “Jack in The Bean Stack” to show readers how the kid is viewing his father. Another device the writer used in his poem would be alliteration, he used words that start with the same letter a few times, one of them would be “colossal cruel”. “Little Boy Crying” has a complex language and would appeal to people in their late teens and over, it also appeals to parents and any care
