“Mother to Son” is a poem written by one of the most admired and popular writers during the Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes. The time period the poem was first published was in 1922. The poem is twenty lines long with no apparent rhyme schemes or rhythm. There are two characters in this poem, a mother and her son. The vernacular makes it seem like the mother is uneducated and is/was apart of the lower class based upon the information given. The depiction of the rhetoric device, anaphora, is shown with the word “And” at the beginning of several of the lines. The tone of the poem is very heartening, encouraging, and positive. The poem is about a mother giving advice to her son about not giving up and to keep moving forward in life despite hard times.
I thought this was a wonderful piece of work because it is so inspirational and uplifting.
At the beginning of the poem, a mother compares her life to a staircase and tells her son that her life has been no crystal stair. This to me meant that her life hadn’t been easy and she didn’t have a life of glamour, money, or status. She goes on to say that her “staircase” had tacks, splinters, boards torn up, and places with no carpet symbolizing she had a really rough and hard life. She told her son that even though she had all these problems, she kept climbing her staircase, reaching landings, turning

It is very well written and the reader can imagine this conversation going on between the mother and her son in their head. I feel like this selection not only represents America, but humanity as a whole and it shows humanity that they shouldn’t give up even when they are going through hard times. The mother was trying to encourage her son to keep going and have hope, furthermore the author is encouraging the reader and humanity to keep going and have

Dael Orlandersmith's "Forever" provided a riveting experience where Ms. Orlandersmith herself weaves an intricate tale of her life story through a minimalist effort using just herself to lay out the scene. She began the deep connection with the audience at the beginning by coming onstage and speaking directly to the audience about typical theatre etiquette such as cell phones and then plunging into her story without a beat of hesitation, thus pulling in and engaging the audience immediately. Ms. Orlandersmith's stories were so intense and palpable that it was important to have a deep connection with the audience from the first beat. There were times where she would pause and it was if her words were lingering in the air touching each person individually. Her use of background music a couple times where she continued telling the story underneath it made it feel like an actual movie flashback where the moment surrounds you and the story…

A way in which Dan and Billie differ in personality or behavior is how they communicate which suggests that the brothers actually care about each other despite their fighting. Through out the story Dan communicates more openly while Billie tends to be quieter. At the beginning of the story Billie is talking about soldiers to his brother Dan who quickly tells him to be quiet and insults him (Crane 221). This kind of communication is often how siblings talk to each and suggests they have a normal relationship as brothers. A little later in the story the narrator describes that Billie decides to “refrain from speaking to him” (224).…

By reading this book I think it really helps with patient delivery care. This book was very interesting. Pat Moore went out of her way to turn into an elderly lady, because she was determined to see exactly how the elderly get treated or even how one day when she is “old” how she would possibly be treated. I think it was a great idea, because it just goes to show how elderly are really treated by other people. I think if more people read this they will have a different outlook on “old” people.…

I had a hard time deciding which one my favorite poet and poem that I would be able to analyze and write an essay over. One of my all-time favorite poets in Langston Hughes, one reason why is because he never hides the trails and hard times that African American went through over the years. He tells the truth whether it is harsh or not. So, I chose “The Negro Mother” by Langston Hughes, because I knew by the word “Negro” that I would be informed on some history from back when slavery was alive and well. So, one of the first things that I did was read the poem twice.…

In “Mother to Son” the mother speaks to her son comparing life to a staircase. She says that it is not a crystal staircase; there are tacks, splinters, and boards torn up, “But all the time I'se been a-climbin' on, And reachin' landin's, And turnin' corners.” This poem establishes the truth that there will be prejudices and discrimination because of the color of skin, but that does not mean you should stop trying. Hughes’s poem, “I Too” is about an African American figure who faces the common struggle of discrimination, yet feels as though he too is an American and should have the same rights as the majority. By the end of the poem there is optimism for a better tomorrow, “Besides, They’ll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed— I, too, am…

In “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes, the poem incorporates the symbolism of the crystal stairs to represent an African American’s struggle for equal rights and achieving their dreams. Hughes portrays this symbolism through the comparison of a black’s life, which is represented by an old, worn out staircase, in relation to a perfect and beautiful crystal stair. The stanzas of the poem state, “For I’se still goin’, honey / And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair” (17-19). “It’s had tacks in it, / And splinters” show that a black’s staircase was not perfect and that they can only go up to help make it better (3-4).…
