First Hughes uses imagery to present a picture of the metaphorical staircase. The poem uses imagery to convey the message that every mom should tell their child/children about life; that is hard. For example, the mother tells the son,”Life for me ain't no crystal stair”.(Mother to Son,Line 2). She compares life to a crystal stair. Personification is a figure of speech where human qualities are given to animals, objects or ideas.Hughes poem is not fully about personification but their are some lines in the poem that express personification clearly.“It's had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up,” expresses personification that relates to life.
There should be a mother in everybody's lives. Imagery,metaphor,and personification are the three major literary devices that Langston Hughes uses. Imagery expresses a lot in the poem and has meaning and understanding about it. There are metaphors that make sense and their are metaphors that don't make sense.
