She was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, in Skopje, Yugoslavia, on August 27, 1910. At the time she was born, Albania was apart of the Ottoman Empire. Her parents were grocers and she had a very close relationship with her mother after her father died when she was young. Her mother opened a cloth and embroidery shop to support Agnes and herself after the passing of her husband. From a very young age Agnes had a religious inclination toward life. Raised Roman Catholic, she was deeply involved in a school parish that focused on missionary activities. By the age of twelve she often found herself helping the poor. When Agnes was a teenager she focused even more on her religious duties and was inspired by a group of missionaries in Bengal,
