On a train to Darjeeling, as one looks to the scenery, they hear a voice telling them to go into the slums and serve the poor while living with them as one. Then they realize that very voice is the voice of God. This is exactly what happened to Mother Teresa, as she describes it to be the “Call” that set her on her world famous journey. Some could say that charity is one of the best ways to demonstrate a selfless attitude and true heroism. Yet, how many people are there in the world that truly believe in the power of charitable giving? One woman, at least, believed in that power, and gave her life to the slums of third world countries in an effort to save them. Mother Teresa is known today throughout all of the world as a symbol of help and faith. She is the founder of the Missionaries of Charity and countless other organization connections, all of which devoted to her own cause. But, why? What made Mother Teresa a humanitarian giant that we know, and how did she become such a hero to the people of the world? She was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, in Skopje, Yugoslavia, on August 27, 1910. At the time she was born, Albania was apart of the Ottoman Empire. Her parents were grocers and she had a very close relationship with her mother after her father died when she was young. Her mother opened a cloth and embroidery shop to support Agnes and herself after the passing of her husband. From a very young age Agnes had a religious inclination toward life. Raised Roman Catholic, she was deeply involved in a school parish that focused on missionary activities. By the age of twelve she often found herself helping the poor. When Agnes was a teenager she focused even more on her religious duties and was inspired by a group of missionaries in Bengal,
