Mosul is the main city in northern Iraq and second largest city with over two million people. That area is rich in oil fields which keep it wealthy along with the flow of goods. The fight for the city has lasted months and has been progressively getting worse. The on-going battle for the city has been brutal while advancing forces include roadside bombs, dug in snipers, fleets of suicide car bombs and oil fire haze. The feud has caused people to flee and seek safety from the city but many have got caught in the cross fire. More than half of the population has been decreased because of the war. Daily refugees flee their homes taking to the streets in hopes to find safety which has contributed to the refugee crisis.

    Overregulation In Iraq

When I was stationed in Iraq I learned that during the transition from one command to another there should be a time that policies and procedures should remain the same until they can be evaluated to see if they work or need to be revised to be more efficient in completing the mission. I believe that taking over a department having numerous policies and procedures has more of an advantage than that of one with very few. If I were to inherit a department, I would prefer to take over a department with policies and procedures that were numerous. By having numerous policies and procedures it may regulate the officers too much but after reviewing and revising the policies and procedures of the department. Overregulation can simply be eased by revising…

Introduction In 2011, the people of Syria lead protests inspired by the Arab Spring, which quickly lead to bloody civil war. Since the war in Syria began, an estimated 13.5 million Syrians have sought refuge in neighboring countries and further (UNHCR, 2016). Some will have family that escaped before and paved a path that's easier to follow, others will stay in horrific conditions because they have no where to go, and the rest will try to flee to different countries, becoming refugees in nations where a vocal minority will loudly protest their presence. As most of the world is aware, Syria has been suffering through four and a half years of civil war, during which 250,000 Syrians have been killed, according to Rodgers et al.. There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight, as both sides- the Syrian government and the rebels- refuse to ceasefire or compromise. In addition, ISIS is making the situation worse through their involvement and frequent use of the war for recruitment. Because civilians have been subject to bombing, sieges, and chemical warfare, about 4.8 million have fled their country (Rodgers et al.). This has caused tension in the global community, as countries attempt to figure out how to accommodate them, if at all.…

Although the Iraqi Government was guilty of many human rights violations in the past they recently have asked for “tolerance for all religious communities and implemented reforms to rectify sectarian imbalances and hiring standards in government offices as well as provided security for places of worship including churches, mosques, shrines, and religious pilgrimage sites and routes.” ("International Religious Freedom Report for 2014") Nonetheless, in spite of these efforts to protect religious communities and sites, violence still continued to escalate between the religious groups. Because of this violence the security in Iraq has deteriorated sharply causing the government to loose control of territories to ISIS. “Freedom of belief and practice…

When everything around you begins to crumble and fear overcomes you what is there left to do, and the answer is to survive. Having the courage to survive takes so much more bravery and effort than the actual process of surviving takes. In multiple world series including sex trafficking, through the eyes of a survivor, Politics of the Middle East, and Katy Preston surviving the Holocaust I found the common theme of survival and the strength it takes in order to survive. The people described throughout the different world series face obstacles such as kidnapping, the loss of emotion, and near death experiences but still continue on. Danielle is a survivor of sex trafficking and for her to first be able to escape is amazing because of what she…

People have been fleeing since the beginning of time. Mostly conflicts and natural disasters, but also various other causes can be the reason for the migration of people across territories, looking for a better place. When we talk about displaced people, we often only think about war refugees who leave their homes and country in order to find safety somewhere else. But even in our ‘peaceful’ western world, free of war and terror, several kinds of fleeing can be designated. Although the underlying reasons aren’t as life-threatening, the act of leaving one place for another stays the same.…
