The water was very cold and hypothermia would start to over come you right away.The prisoners had a homemade raft and only got to put it in the water when they were fleeing towards freedom so they had no idea if it was ready or not. The prisoners weren’t in shape either, except the few pushups or sit ups they did in their cells, so it would be hard to make that swim if the rafts failed.
