The reading The Other Family addresses an important problem in Canadian society. There is a hegemonic culture in Canada that causes immigrants to fear that they will lose their own customs and traditions. In the reading the little girl drew a picture of a family that was not representative of her own but that was what she knew to be a “Canadian family”. The reaction of her mother is indicative of the fact that this is a concern for their family and their heritage. This shows the overarching issue about the education system not being inclusive of all cultures as they should be in a multicultural country.…

Laurel Elder and Steven Greene in their work, “Politicians love to talk about family. But maybe not yours.” try to argue that politicians need to start talking about all families and not just traditional families and need to provide support for all families. While their abundance of logical appeals and their choice of not including emotional appeals would make their argument successful for the type of article they produced, their lack of intrinsic ethos makes their credibility a little faulty and makes their overall argument unsuccessful. Elder and Greene are both Political Science professors; Elder teaches at Hartwick University in New York and Greene teaches at North Carolina University.…

In the book, The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap by Stephanie Coontz, the author deconstructs various types of stereotypes and myths embodied by television shows that romanticize family life and gender roles. Coontz (1992) states that these idealizations promote the “traditional family” myth which she describes as “an ahistorical amalgam of structures, values, and behaviors that never coexisted in time and place” (p.9). The notions derived from this myth are a compound of characteristics that resemble mid-nineteenth century and early 20th century paradigms concerning family life (Coontz, 1992, p.9). Coontz (1992) describes both components in detail in Chapter 1 describing the first as a mother-child oriented family…

While I wasn’t experiencing a lot of the things that I saw in other shows centered around black families, The Cosby Show offered me a way to reconcile my identity crisis as a young adolescent raised in white suburbia. I saw black people who lived like me, talked like me, had friends that looked like my friends, and had parents with the same kind of jobs as my parents. The Huxtables presented America with another definition of blackness, as countless intellectuals in the discourse surrounding The Cosby Show have affirmed. It was the definition of blackness that I knew and the definition that became a major part of my…

Diversity on American Television Since 1968, there have been dozens of programs on American TV featuring a relatively diverse array of black families. But for many years within this span of time, there has been what has felt like a drought of Black imagery, a “whiteout,” if you will. Many of our shows essentially came and went, while programs featuring White families continued to dominate the airwaves. Today, however, Black faces are finally all over the network and cable television lineups, and megahits such as ABC’s black-ish, a sitcom featuring the Johnson clan, and Fox’s Empire, with the infamous Lyons, have Hollywood scrambling to find the next hot Black family for prime-time TV. Blowing record ratings out of the box dduring season one, Empire became the first program in the history of Nielson’s People Meters to grow in total viewers with each episode following its premiere.…

Dines believes the media depicts African American women as women unfit and incapable of being motherly. The common example that comes to mind that disproves this negative portrayal of African American women is The Cosby Show. However, in Racism and the American way of Media, Ash Corea believes The Cosby Show is contradictory to what is a more commonplace portrayal of African Americans in the media, “This black family is not depicted as dysfunctional, stereotypical, violent, drug addicted, or a problem to the rest of society, the usual media fare” (Corea 359). Corea believes African Americans are usually described as problematic misfits in society. This type of degradation towards African Americans prompts the question as to why African Americans are depicted as such low achieving…
